Oil Usage Ridiculous

Hey guys newbie here, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be around too long. I bought a 2006 linear about 6 months ago for my daughter. The car is absolutely beautiful, drove 3 hrs to get it, we've always had subies, and theyre just killer in the snow but we wanted something different. It has 80 something on it with new headgaskets, timing belt and all components, brand new tires, wheels, yes, new stock wheels, emblems all around, the car is really clean for the year. Everything is documented  and dealer installed, a ton was put into this car, and the car drives like its on rails, yeah it's that nice. About 3 months ago my daughter told me the oil light was flickering, I checked the oil, nothing on the stick, and I added over 3 qts. I have since read about excessive oil usage in these cars and there really is nothing u can do about it, short of disassembling and installing new rings. It doesnt leak a drop, doesnt smoke, yet the tailpipe is sooty. I am constantly checking the oil, and it prolly uses a qt every 500 miles or so. I also noticed when I changed the oil, I put 4.5 qts in and the oil only registered halfway on the stick. Whats up with this thing??

I've had many 2.5 subies, and love em, but 4 qts usually shows full or over full before starting, not this one. As a matter of fact when I checked the oil 2 weeks ago the oil only showed on 1 side othe stick, no matter which way I put the stick in weird, and it showed just above low, but only on 1 side, and I make sure the oil is warm and the car has been sitting for at least 5 mins, on a flat surface. So basicallyI'm wondering, if there is any way I can slow down the consumption of oilin this car?? I run 10 30 in it, dont no if that makes a difference or not, unfortunately I think I am going to have to sell this car

Nah don't have leakdown numbers, dont plan on spending another nickel on this car, it is what it is. I was wondering if there was any way to slow down oil consumption on this thing?

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

Switch to another oil, try another weight.  The car will consume less when you find the right one.

IIRC, you should be running 5W30 for most of the US.

I had the same problem when I went from a 2.5 subie to the 2.0 Saabaru.  I was kinda freaking out because of how much oil it was eating but nothing on the pan.  Long story short, it was the blow by.  The common solution is to install an oil catch can but since I didn't want more maintenance, I opted for a more maintenance free solution and got an air-oil seperater from grim speed. It was more than I wanted to spend but it's significantly reduce oil consumption.  I only need to add ~1 qt ever 3~4k miles.  Hopefully your problem is identical to mine and it's going to be a simple bolt-on solution.

Good luck.

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

I used to have oil consumption issues, until I switched to non-synthetic oil. For me, it was common to use 1-2 quarts during a 3k OCI.

I now do changes with whatever 5W-30 is on sale every 3k miles. I always add the entire 5 quart jug. I started doing this in 2009, and have not had a problem since.

It's also worth noting that the dipstick (as discussed on this forum dozens of times) is all but worthless. On a hot car it will read low, and on a cold car, it's not easy to get a consistent reading. If I check it and there is any oil on the dipstick, I consider it fine.

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

I had consumption issues until I moved to Rotella T6. Like others have said, try some different oils and see what helps.

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

ok theres some good ideas. Rotella T6 5w 40?? And adding 5 qts??? isn't the capacity 4.2?? Overfilling is good?? Very interesting ideas tho. The catch can idea I used on an 86 amc eagle I had a few years ago, but it worked. Lol.  and the dipstick is worthless?? I like the way u guys think tho!!

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

I ha a an 08 Outback with the same 2.5 naturally aspirated engine as your car. It also uses oil but I managed to cut the consumption by installing a new pcv and using Marvel Mystery oil in the oil and gas tank. I've been using Castrol semi synthetic 5w30 on oil changes, after 1500 miles on the oil I add the same brand and type oil but 10w 40 in anticipation to adding the mystery oil. After 2000 miles on that oil I'll add 3/4 quart of the Marvel oil to the engine oil. Let it do its thing and keep an eye on the oil level, if I have to add again I just use the 5w 30 but I change the oil at 3,000 miles. Meanwhile I use the mystery oil in the gas tank on every fill up. It's been an on going process, I've been doing it that way for 10,000 miles since I purchased the Outback with 170,000 miles on its original engine. I was adding a quart of oil once a week, now it uses 1/4 of a quart per week.

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

In order to get an accurate dipstick reading, I remove the o-ring at the top of the dipstick.  Suddenly, the dipstick works like it is supposed to.  Don't know why, but it works like magic.

Then I replace it to prevent blow by, or whatever its there for.

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

Marvel mystery oil??? Old skool!!! I like it!!  They still make that!?!? I have also found that after doing head gaskets, I know Ive done it, if the dipstick tube is not all the way down in the pan it will give a false reading. But from what I can see this one is seated properly, yeah, that dipstick is weird!! And liqui moly must have gold in it. I run that in my vw tdi, dont know why its so crazy expensive, but the 10k oil changes in that help ease the pain.

No, do not put in 5. Capacity is 4.6, at least on the 2005 Aero. Too lazy to look up 2.5i.

Re: Oil Usage Ridiculous

No not yet. I will try to remedy it, by changing to a different oil, Im glad theres hope, Im not pulling this motor apart.  Im glad tohear some guys have had success with that. i'll prolly go with the rotella first, since thats what I run in my duramax anyway. I also have a 99 forester the tranny started slipping on that at 140k. Some guy on line told me to put a qt of trans medic in it, and at 190k it still shifts like new. go figure. And as far as selling this car, there's a real narrow market for em, I think the condition would get me my money back tho.

I overfilled my motorcycle. Was getting 47 mpg. Did an oil change, filled it properly, and am now getting 53-54.

So what you're saying is that if I 'put in the proper amount of oil', I'd be getting 15% better fuel economy. For a Stage 2 Aero, that's like going from 19 mpg to 22 mpg. lol In a car (not a bike), there is not going to be much of a penalty of a 0.4 quart increase in oil - mostly because the oil pan is larger (lesser packaging constraints when compared to a bike) and the crank counterweights do not pass through nearly as much liquid oil as they would on a bike. The mpg difference for a car would be negligible.

With South Carolina premium at about $2.25 a gallon, I'm not phased by this in the least. The perceived added benefit of lessening the chance of oil starvation and fried crank bearings endemic to the EJ205 is enough for me.
