Re: Ford Transit Connect

Ambient Air sensing doesn't reset (on many/most newer Ford vehicles) until you drive the car for some distance - has it been on the road yet?

They're also really common for techs to leave unplugged.

Worst case would be the PCM reading the signal correctly, but sending a CAN message out on a different PID than the climate head is expecting to see.  I don't know how your shop handled the mix and match of all the various modules to ensure signal compatibility.

Yeah, the reset requires 20mph to be maintained for 90 seconds continuously or pressing the A/C and Re-circulation button at the same time, then A/C again within 2 seconds. It has been on the road - driven to/from the Ford dealership a few times. It does seem to be 'learning' better and improving over time.

The new issue is related to the gauge cluster. All of the error lights are on all the time. The Ford dealership had been saying this was a normal and simple thing to resolve and that they could easily reprogram it. But, last week when they got into it, it turned out it was not so easy. Vaccar has a relationship with another dealer that seems to have a better understanding of the scenario so that's the new route to try this week.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

Unfortunately...no.

The air conditioning thing seems to be resolved. We're on to a new issue.

That is the PCM (powertrain control module - Ford's term for ECU). I found a guy in the Tallahassee area who thought he could change the VIN block in the PCM to be the TC VIN rather than the FoST VIN so that I don't have the emissions guys giving me troubles when they plug into my OBDII port and the computer says FoST when they're looking at a TC. So, Vaccar sent it to him, he changed the VIN, reported no problems, and sent it back.

When Vaccar got it back, it was acting weird. The gas pedal didn't work, and tons of trouble codes that weren't there before popped up right away that seemed to indicate that the PCM was trying to be a PCM for a TC now. The tuner said only the VIN block was changed so this shouldn't have happened, but I don't know exactly how he's doing the VIN change and if there are other changes being made in the background without his intent or something. So, now we're sending it back to him to change the VIN back to what it was originally as a troubleshooting step.

Adding a lot of time generally is just the fact that Aaron is on tour with Indian motorcycles doing promotion work for them so he's travelling it seems like more than 50% of the time. So, the already extremely slow turnarounds for things are now EXTREMELY slow turnarounds.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

Damn sucks to have emissions people who care I guess.  In Illinois as long as your OBD is ready and has 0 check engine lights you pass.  I passed with the Saabaru once having an exposed ECU on the passenger floorboard that I borrowed from a buddy with a WRX that we just put a base map scaled to my injector on.  I passed the test and then switched back to my ECU (which was throwing a code at the time) in the parking lot of the emissions place lol.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

It's a double edged sword. I appreciate that emissions actually are tested and controlled here, to be honest. Denver used to have a pretty prevalent smog cloud all year before better controls were placed. I prefer no smog cloud.

At the same time, like most regulating bodies, they are completely unable to consider nuance/spirit/intent of the regulation. I failed emissions testing a few years ago with a 3" high-flow catted downpipe because the inspecting guy couldn't find the catalytic converter. I showed it to him and he said he didn't believe me because "it looks too small." The insane part is that it passed the emissions test itself on a dyno. So, in his mind I had cheated the system by somehow passing the actual test without a catalytic converter. Which, if true, would make me a genius (and soon a billionaire). So, he failed me.

I ended up just taking it to another place that happened to not be doing visual inspections that day and they passed me.

I agree with the spirit of the law sentiment. Good visions followed by laws drafted and passed by people who don’t fully get it, then enforced by people who don’t fully get it.

Still driving my unicorn!

She's over 145k miles now but still going strong. Old faithful, doesn't burn any oil still, no real problems to speak of in a long time...knock on wood.

I've said for a while now that if there's something that happens that's not worth fixing (like ringland failure/spun bearing/etc) then I'd sell it for parts/scrap and buy a Miata (gen 1-3 probaby) to hold me over in the interim.

Look at this thread, he's given dozens upon dozens of updates. He's not withholding from you; he just doesn't have anything to report.

How do you think he feels? Jeez. Don't make the guy regret sharing his progress or there might come a day when we get no more updates.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

I’ve followed this thread from the beginning and have seen the updates. The last time he gave an update was four months ago. He finally replied to requests for updates, but did not give an actual update. This leads me to believe that he’s either done giving updates or nothing has happened.
He has absolutely no obligation to provide updates… but I’m not going to stop pressing for them.
And people are breaking balls quite a bit here. I don’t know why I got singled out.

Re: Ford Transit Connect

iamchris and cjaama: you are both largely correct. There's not much update to give! Progress is excruciatingly slow, and has been for over a year at this point.

There are a few minor details, but at this stage I'm not really motivated to get into them as they happen. I just want it to be done, and to drive the thing around for the next 10 years. I would estimate probably somewhere around 20-30 people regularly ask for updates in person and I almost always have disappointingly paltry progress reports to give.

At this stage though, I'll give you this: there's exactly one thing remaining on the list, and that is to reprogram the gauge cluster so the lights aren't all on. I have a guy who thinks he can do it, and he lives within an hour's drive from Vaccar. So, in theory I need to get him to the van for a couple hours and bob's my uncle - I'm on a flight to go pick it up.

That could be somewhere between 1 day and 6 months away. Don't worry, I'll keep you guys appraised.
