Re: My project Saabaru

The rescue project has been running trouble free, the tuning process was long, finally running on a map that has no detonation. I love the car, happy with how it turned out.

Re: My project Saabaru

Since photobucket decided to fuck everybody I guess I should try to replace the images I've previously posted here at some point. Meanwhile I'm going to post a few pictures to show what my car looks like now and some scattered images of the rescue process.

Re: My project Saabaru

Thank you sir, took a lot of elbow grease to polish my black turd. I love it, hard work pays off.

Spent all day yesterday working on the desert silver aero I picket up locally. Dropped a jdm ej205 into it. The shifter had lots of side to side movement, the po must have rested his hand on the shifter all the time. I replaced the shift linkage and bushings. Replaced the ripped inner boots on the front cv axles, replaced all four rusty brake calipers with the leftovers from the black rescue and installed a fresh set of KYB Excel G with a set of usdm wagon pinks. Didn't spend any time taking pictures and documenting the process, there is already enough documented swaps out there.

Re: My project Saabaru

If you want a car to preserve and own for long you must start with a rust free car, there are fewer of them out there every day. My black car was a neglected car but had no rust, that's why it deserved saving. I knew I wanted to swap a jdm STi drive train into a 05 92x aero,  checkmark

The desert silver aero will be my work horse, it will see all year round use and plenty of road trips to Missouri. The shell already has rust, I don't have to feel bad driving it thru the winter. I'm keeping it to a basic stage 2, initially on the usdm ecu. I did pick up a jdm wrx ecu to run avcs, later.

Re: My project Saabaru

If it's a rust free example you will want to make that clear when you go forward with a proper for sale thread. We kind of like Picking them up after they've spun a rod bearing.

Re: My project Saabaru

Having issues with the AWD, I think something wrong with the rear diff, I'm in the process of pulling the rear diff. Plan is to bring it to RalliSpec in NJ and have them inspect it and rebuild it, hopefully.

Re: My project Saabaru

My car has been off the road since December when I started to notice an issue with the car pulling to the driver side under acceleration. Had the alignment checked out, pulled the rear diff and had it inspected, new seals installed and lash adjusted. Unfortunately the diff is still out of the car waiting for decent weather to wrench outside. While my car has been apart I started to think about the turbo choice I made, I just didn't like the driveability with the Blouch 18G XTR. Talking about it with Stephen Clark from IA Tuning he suggested going to a stock STi turbo, a VF48. I removed and sold the Blouch and started looking for a low mile take off VF48. I found a practically new VF48 and sent it to SoCal Porting to get it ported and coated, they promise 200 rpm earlier boost delivery. I'm a TD04 fan, I love the quick response but its not a turbo I'd install on the ver 7 STi motor, I'm hoping the VF48 is going to be the perfect compromise. I'm so looking forward to good weather and getting my project back on the road.

Looks Great! I love the STI seats . Would like a pair for my 06 Aero. Where did you find them and was it difficult installing them?

Re: My project Saabaru

Thank you, I found them advertised on Nasioc, they were in Jersey, took a ride out and picked them up. Difficulty is not the issue, in your case you need to make sure the donor vehicle is a 06-07 model in order to keep the airbags compatible with your vehicle.

Productive Sunday, VF48 is now in place, also went back to a stock air box, Started it for the first time since December, can't wait to start driving it again.

Re: My project Saabaru

Replaced the antifreeze hose on the lower turbo pipe. Started it and checked to make sure the leak is no more, all good. I'm planning on installing a 2017 STi top mount intercooler, ordered the passenger side stay from the dealer but I think they ordered the wrong part as the new part is identical to my existing stay.

Going to a stock airbox, Instelled a new lower half as the original was cracked. Aftamaf will also need replacing, factory part doesn't work and the aftermarket one I was using with the Cobb airbox does not work either.

Damn, that bike is light.  My full suspension is like 30lbs. I use the same bike rack, love it. Convinced my friend to get the same one too.

Re: My project Saabaru

I have a 2016 STI TMIC, I used the stock bracket and added a short piece of flat stock with a couple holes in it to line up with the new IC mount hole. Works great, took about 30 minutes to sort out.

How did you attach the Cobb heat shield? I see the bolt on the side closer to the trans but the other side is supposed to mount to a heatshield on the stock DP, which is long gone. Is it secure enough?

How do you like the Moroso coolant tank? I still have the stock metal one which is looking pretty ugly, was thinking of getting the Killer B version but it is damn expensive.

Re: My project Saabaru

Drew, my rack started life as a freedom 2 but the frame holders damaged one of my carbon fiber bikes, Sarris sent me the parts to convert to the superclamp. It's been a great rack, high speed tested to a ridiculous number, bike stayed put. In the bicycle world the more $ you spend the lighter the bike gets, even downhill bikes. My new bike is a cross country racing bike, its heavy compared to my old Cannondale scalpel that was 22 1/2 lbs, I miss that bike.

Snow, I'm going to extend the bracket also but I'm going to weld the extension from the old intercooler stay that I hacked off. The Cobb heat shield is bolted on to the original heat shield bracket that bolts on to the down pipe/turbo flange. I did make a custom bracket for the lowest mounting point. The bracket I made allows me to bolt on to the factory bracket on top of the up pipe, it's rock solid in place.

The Moroso tank works well but out here on long island the air is salty so the aluminium always looks corroded, no issues otherwise.

Ooooooh, will have to give that a try! So lame as so many people on forums used them so a lot of valuable posts are now picture-less. Would help to bring some back from the dead.
