I got the car back and no more vibration.  The factory pads obviously don't dissipate heat very well, so I'll be getting a set of carbon metallic pads real quickly.

On a side note, the dealer pu a nice sized dent into the rear left door for me.   mad  They will take care of it, but I have to say I've had it with this dealership.  I'll be going somewhere else from here on out.

Wow, you have had bad luck at that dealer.

Regarding factory pads...
I replaced my front rotors/pads because of they were warped and they have been fine ever since, including 1 track day on track almost 2 hours. I got the brakes hot enough to boil some fluid (had to bleed them later) but the pads/ rotors are fine...I am sure I used up a good amount of pad though...Just an FYI

When you replaced them, did you use stock or aftermarket?

Re: Warped rotors?

What is the symptom for warped rotor? I had my 2001 X5 rotor+pad replaced in the 1st year service visit and the service manager told me they were "out of spec" although I didn't notice anything particular wrong when braking (no noise or hard to brake)?

Re: Warped rotors?

confused I might have this problem too. I am getting a brake vibration (can feel from brake pedal). It's been fine since day one with no problems except it has always felt on the soft side, but I am comparing it with a miata I used to drive.

Will it still be covered if this is the problem even though I passed the 1yr/20,000 km wear and tear warranty?

I'm willing to bet  embeer that the dealer tells you it's maintenance, especially since your past 12/20.

BTW, how did the rear sway bar turn out I sold you?

I am going in for an oil change soon so I am going to tell the dealer about it and see what happens.

- Greg, the RSB you sold me is great, definitely feels better than before.

Re: Warped rotors?

I've not had this issue on my new 92x but it was a common problem on my VW and it came down to pad material transfer.  As others have stated, since they've done away with asbestos in the pads, the pads have become the issue.

Good reference article on the problem HERE. arrow-left

I was just going to post this article.  Good thing I read all the responses.  Warped rotors are mainly a myth.  Read the article and you will learn alot.  I certainly did! up

Re: Warped rotors?

First time posting here. I have an '05 Linear. I think the brakes really stink. Rotors were first replaced at 2K miles (the dealer, which I really like, btw, said it was probably from sitting for a long time on the dock...Didn't make any sense to me, but OK)...Anyway, at 12K miles, the front brakes were shuddering again and they replaced them again. Well, 6K miles later I can see that I'm going to need to have yet another brake job soon, this time on MY dime (both previous replacements were done under warranty w/ no problem). I admit I'm a hard braker but I NEVER ride the brake and I've never had this problem w/ any other car I've ever owned (everything from a '90 Dodge Colt to many of the older V8 Mopars). It's not like I'm racing the thing--it really can't get out of its own way w/o the turbo but I knew that when I bought it-- and my commute is about 9 miles each way in moderate traffic. Thing is, overall, I really love the car.

I asked the parts guy about aftermarket rotors or if the WRX rotors would fit on my car. He expressed horror at the mere thought of using aftermarket parts (I'm not surprised) and said he knew nothing about Subaru parts. So, my question is this: I'm not going to be doing the work myself so if the Saab dealership isn't going to install anything but the same OEM crap that's already been replaced twice, are the WRX rotors and pads better? Will they fit on my 92x Linear w/o any major problems? And has anyone done this swap and found it to provide better performance and wear?

Would appreciate any help in this area. Thanks!

Re: Warped rotors?

The rotors aren't warping, it's VERY likely to be pad deposits.  I bet if you ran race pads on the car for about 1/2 hour on an isolated street, with some proper hard stops, the build-up would come right off and you'd be in good shape.

That or a VERY light lathe job.  I say do that, the car's under warranty.  Lightly lathe them (if the dealer has a modern lathe machine, otherwise don't) and try some good street pads like a Hawk HPS from TireRack.

StopTech has a great FAQ section, here's a good one.

Re: Warped rotors?

Siper, Thanks very much for the advice. I'm going to print out your reply as well as the link you sent and take them to my dealer. You'd think they would have told me this after the first replacement. If it's just the pads, I'll buy the brand you mentioned myself and see if I can persuade them to install under the warranty. I'll also ask them about the light lathing.

Thanks again,
Brad

Re: Warped rotors?

I just had mine done about a week ago at around 6200 miles.  Do they just replace them with the same old problematic parts? confused  That would be a complete waste of everybody's time and money! sly

Re: Warped rotors?

I know people who have had the Hawks who were very UN-impressed by them.  Have many people here used them first hand and really liked them, or are people just reiterating unproven hype? confused

At first, I was completely unimpressed with the Hawk HPS pads. After 2000 miles or so, I would surely buy them again. In the beginning I got mad dust, now not so much. They grip a lot better at faster speeds. Around town, the pedal feel is different than stock, they also squeek at times. But I would say they grip better than OEM when pushed hard.  up up

I dug them. when I went to 235's the stock pads just stopped working after 2-3 hard presses of the pedal (twisty road with short straights) you really had to sink your foot into it. the hawks seemed to bite harder the warmer they got. they felt a touch light at first until they heated up (half a second of pedal pressure) but worked great when you really needed them to.

Too bad I fail at driving. sad There are green-stuffs on my RS. They're ok too.
