Warped rotors?

My rotors were warped right from the start and I had the dealership replace them under warranty at 7500 miles.  By 12,000 miles the brake shudder was back.  mad  I was going to have them turned and then look for some carbon metallic pads, but I'm not sure if that's the best route.  Does anyone else have this issue?  I don't make a habit out of stopping hard and leaving my foot on the brake.  The terrain is really flat around here so it's not necessary.

Re: Warped rotors?

I had mine replaced at 3,000 and it started to do it again a while back.  I just lived with it for a while and it went away.  I think these stock pads must really stick to the rotors (even when you are careful) and it is a matter of wearing it off once this happens.

Re: Warped rotors?

It happened to me around 5,000 miles.  The dealer replaced all rotors and pads.  I would talk to the dealer about getting them replaced.  Its a known problem and being that you are just outta the 12,000 mile warranty part. I think they would replace them or cut them for free.

Re: Warped rotors?

According to the dealer the brake warranty expires at 10,000 miles.  I guess I'm on my own.  confused  I think I'll just have the rotors turned and get some better pads.

Re: Warped rotors?

No, the wear warranty is 1 year 16,000 miles.  Look in your book.

Re: Warped rotors?

+1 on 16,000 miles, the brakes fall under wear and tear. There isn't a seperate brake warranty.

Re: Warped rotors?

I just spoke with the service advisor and he told me to contact Saab customer service.  I spoke with a customer service tech who told me since I had them replaced once they will not replace them again.   banghead  What a crock of crap.  I'm going to call back to see if I can speak with another individual and demad these "policies" in writing.

Re: Warped rotors?

Mine started doing it at 16k.

At 20k now, and its almost unbearable.

I'm looking for some decent vented rotors, and maybe some hawk hks pads.

Re: Warped rotors?

I complained the 3k, the BS service manager said they need to "settle in" , went to another dealership at 15k service and they swapped out new rotors and pad with no fight at all.

Re: Warped rotors?

Its not like the dealer doesn't get paid for them. Most dealers jump at a chance to do stuff like that.  Unless they got in trouble with their warranty returns latley, that means Saab will be watching their warranty fixes very closely.

I use to work for an olds dealer.  We got the pleasure of working on the alero.  Those rotors warped every 10,000 miles no matter what.  The nice thing about being the mechanic you get paid like 2.5 hours for just a front pad and rotor swap that took 10 mins.

Re: Warped rotors?

The Saab customer rep said "sir, you are right"   biggrin  She was very helpful and gave me the verbatum from the warranty booklet (page 12) stating that brake rotors, pads, clutch, etc are covered for 1 year or 16,000 miles.  My car is one year old this Thursday!!  banana

I called the service manager and repeated what she said, gave him the Dealer assistance line, and her name for reference.  You could tell he was pissed about being proved wrong, but kept cool.  Needless to say I'm getting new brakes.  roxor

Thanks guys!!

This is a problem with just about EVERY newer vehicle in the US, not just ours.  I see hundreds of these cases that get kicked out of lemon law litigation.  With CAFE fuel mileage standards giving out incentives, most vehicle manufacturers went with thinner, lighter rotors to save weight, by reducing unsprung weight and rotating mass.  This improved fuel mileage, across the board, by a small margin, to the manufacturer's benefit, but to our disadvantage.

Also, asbestos, as bad as it may be for us, is a GREAT friction material that dissipates heat easily.  Without asbestos in our brake pads, the newer materials are left to combat heat and friction, and don't do as well.  The newer pads, especially, don't dissipate heat as well as older ones.

Combine more heat with thinner, lighter rotors, and you get warpage quickly.  This problem wasn't so common 10 years ago...

Right...
I worked for a Nissan dealers for 20 years and about 10 years ago was when they started taking asbestos out of thier brake linings.....
Before that, they had few if any problems with their brakes, but as soon as they started removing asbestos, the problems started....For a while there, they were changing the compounds of their brakes every few months it seemed...
They finally got it figured out for the most part...

Cheers,

Scott

Re: Warped rotors?

Well, I got it back and all they did was turn the front rotors and resurface the pads.  sly The rear rotor look horrible and in fact if I have to brake at any speed over 70 the car still shudders.  I left a nasty voicemail for the service manager.

Re: Warped rotors?

Update, I'm taking it back today to get the rears done.  Honestly, it would have just been easier for me to take my rotors to Autozone to get turned and slapped on a set of Carbon Metallic pads, but at this point it's really the principal of it.  I also requested they fill up my tank for my troubles.  The dealership is 50 miles from my house so gas adds up quick.  At least I get a loaner when I drop off my car.   banana  Last time I got a Cadillac CTS.  The time before that it was a Saab 9-3 Aero.  driving

Yeah, I have an Aero.  I gave the service advisor strict instructions to make sure they filled it up with premium.  They probably won't.   roll

just a heads-up, I had my rotors turned once and didn't help at all.  Someone on here pointed out that a thinner (ie. turned) rotor is even more prone to warpage.  I've driven at least 6,000 miles since rotors were replaced and no problems what-so-ever, course I broke them in very gently so I could avoid future problems as much as possible.

Re: Warped rotors?

I got the car back and no more vibration.  The factory pads obviously don't dissipate heat very well, so I'll be getting a set of carbon metallic pads real quickly.

On a side note, the dealer pu a nice sized dent into the rear left door for me.   mad  They will take care of it, but I have to say I've had it with this dealership.  I'll be going somewhere else from here on out.
