"Tell 'ya what I'm gonna do ...." SMALL CAR < $16,000

My GF is looking to buy a new car.

She would like to purchase something economical as she has several school loans to pay now that she has graduated.

MPG is important.
The Surfboard is important.

what do you guys recomend ???

Indications You Have the Wrong Used Car Salesman.

-  When you complain that a car has too many miles, he asks you how many miles you'd like to see on it.
-  Has dog named "Pacer."
-  When you crank the car and fluid rockets over your left shoulder, he notes, "Oh, that's a standard feature on all of these newer models.
-  Uses the 'Slim Jim' strapped to his belt to open the cars for your inspection.
-  When you ask him where the restroom is, he says, "Tell 'ya what I'm gonna do ...."
-  Ever uses the words "excellent" and "Hyundai" in the same sentence.
- Tries to convince you that this car will get better mileage because it is heavier, and you will be able to "coast a lot."
- Do you know why banks have drive through windows? So the cars can see their real owner.

Get a MINI, non S model or how about a Linear, I heard somewhere they are good on gas and relatively cheap.

Toyota Yaris 3 door model FTW!

I like how it looks.....Plus, it's like $12K and good on gas.
If not, the Scion xB is another good choice. Fits your price range and you can cram lots of stuff in the car (for it's size).

Obligatory sig with extensive power mod list for greater respect:
-JDM oil pan, JDM dipstick, STI oil pickup and baffle plate for ultimate oil flow, STI midpipe for uber power gains.
-WetOkole front seat covers for ass sweat stains
-Drawtite hitch (no wiring) for a bike and a trunkmonkey for shits and giggles

She's on a budget, right? I'd go for a Focus. Inexpensive and cheap to run. And rather fun, too.

Or, I ended up renting a Mazda 3 (slushbox even) two weekends ago when I needed to be at a wedding when my car was being tinted. Not a bad ride at all. Had some spirit.

I'd go for the inexpensive yet impressive Honda Fit.  Inexpensive, versatile, economical, big inside, small outside, and fun to drive (if you get the Fit Sport model).  The interior is nice too.  And Edmunds says it fits a surfboard and appeals to the surfer crowd.  It's a neat little car.

longboard? ... that might change things

  Mazda 3 (reviews well, "popular")
Honda Fit (reviews/specs are good enough for test drive)

Re: "Tell 'ya what I'm gonna do ...." SMALL CAR < $16,000

The Honda Fit has been getting great reviews.  We spent a little time in one a few months ago at the local car show and were impressed.

The Yaris is a little too cartoony for my tastes.  Not that the Fit exactly exudes masculinity but it looks more like a "normal" car than an econobox.

The Focus has a terrible depreciation.  Edmunds had a list of cars with the lowest residual values after 3 years.  The Focus was #1 on the list with only around a 20% residual.  Pretty scary if you're buying new...

EDIT:
Nevermind, that should be 14.4%  eek

Fit should be fun to drive even if you don't spring for the sport,  no changes that could effect performance (other then the wheels) unless of course you'll be driving fast enough to make the spoilers worth while, unless it's an auto, then you get steering wheel mounted shifting.  Then again I'd spring for the sport anyways, livens up an uglyish car.

Re: "Tell 'ya what I'm gonna do ...." SMALL CAR < $16,000

The mini was our first choice , but they are more $$$ too bad because they are trully awesome cars !!

Test drove a Yaris 3 door, that was her 2nd choice,  on the outside , That car is TALL,  and its very rommy, looks great, the inside , looks good too, but the plastics are the kind you will find in 99cent taperware, the button layout is funny too.

then we test drove a Mazda 3.

What a differnce, thats a nice car, and its on the same price range, the engine is 50% more powerful 150hp not 105.. BIG difference,  the radio and interior quality is considerably better,  and the mpg is only 4 less.

so we are thinking Mazda 3,

Lots of you have mentioned the Honda Fit,  well it does not look that good To Me. kinda like they should have smoothed it out a bit more, and make it look more Honda,  also the engine is 120 hp. have not driven it,  but i imagine it better than the toyota, and not as good as the mazda, but then they could have better gearing ratios and distribution , so it may be a good ride afterall.

has anyone seen the Nisan Versa ??? Specially the GTR version  big_smile

I have heard great things about the Fit.  People are saying that its a lot better to drive than the price suggests.

It wouldn't hurt to go drive the Fit.

Even though it has less horsepower, it weighs more than 200 lbs. less than the Mazda3.  Great reviews.

arrow-up  I read that article, what you don't realize is that it wasn't even close!!!

If you don't know, C&D rate on a points scale in numerous categories, usually 1 vs. 2 is only a few points difference.  4th-2nd place had like 219, 222, and 225 pts...

The Fit had 250 pts!!!  roxor
