Should I Fly: 2005 Aero Manual $7200 118K

New to the Forum, go easy on me. I'm super serious about getting on the 92x train. My dad had Saab's growing up.

Color is Silver, seller says TB's were replaced at 98K but I ran my own car fax and the service record doesn't show. That's explainable. CF also shows Odometer issue, true mileage unknown, at 70K, at auction. That's less explainable.

In tandem with that, Saab rims are gone, from previous owner, also an Sti exhaust got in there somehow too. I'm afraid ole' boy's been driven hard.

Owners, there are 4
1: 0-47K 2: 47K-70K 3: (bought at auction) 70K-72K 4:72K-current  What's up with mr. 2000 miles? Flipping it?

Body looks good, Engine looks really good. I compared it with this thread https://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=58417 and it's doesn't differ from stock. Interior it as tight as they come, cloth seats.

At first I wanted to fly out to buy it this weekend.
Should I still go check it out?

Rapid Rewards for days, time and hassle is the only issue.

Well, if the body looks good everything else can be fixed with Subaru parts smile
If you have concerns then offer to go halfs on a leakdown/compression test at a local mechanic before you buy.  Wouldn't worry about the exhaust as it could just be the exhaust.  If the stock downpipe is installed and doesn't look like it's been removed then probably nothing too serious was done to the car.
This will be nothing like your dad's Saabs.

Re: Should I Fly: 2005 Aero Manual $7200 118K

I loved those Saabs. But I never saw the repair bills so I never got why he sold ever last one and became a Honda lifer.

So say I test it,

How can I do my best diagnosing the emergence of those soul crushing Suubie problems I've read so much about here (spun bearings, dead turbo's, seized engines) Or is it a coin toss on a 4owner, over the hill car like this. Color me risk-averse

I have a good grasp of how to prevent them (Check your oil, don't floor it from low revs, check your oil)

/\ what itsnotme said. It's not a Saab, it's a Subaru. So if you like your dad's Saabs, you might be disappointed. The sti catback isn't much different than stock and was probably a cheap craigslist upgrade, nothing to worry about.

Get the car inspected before you travel.

How far is the drive back? These cars are pretty reliable if you do the regular maintenance and watch your oil level. Every car has soul crushing issues when you don't maintain them, or drive like a madman or you just have bad luck.

Hhhmmm. If you can get proof of the timing belt service that would be good. As far as the mile discrepancy, mine has that pop up on carfox as well, it can be explained away by an admin error by a shop or DMV when entered. As long as it seems consistent on all the other ones and didnt jump from 40-90 and then stay at 90 it should be OK.

STI catback doesn't really mean it was hooned on hard, just that one of the previous owners wanted (a smidge) more rumble. I vote check it out if seller seems legit

I wouldn't do it.  There are much better deals out there, you just have to be patient.   How many miles is it away?

It's in Denver, I'm in Indy. Direct flight, direct shot, albeit long, on i70

There are some other irons in the fire. It'd be a done deal if the price got knocked down $1500, which I think it should be. I haven't really brought it up until inspection is done.

I'd pass. Use searchtempest and find some closer to you. It's probably had a hard life in Denver = rust. I found a few in Ohio last week. I'm not looking for a new one, just a seat upgrade for mine.

Why would one of the driest states in the nation that doesn't use salt have rusty cars? I've been a tech for 20 years now and I assure you we have zero issues with rust here.

I'm having a hard time deciphering this thread but here's my take:

All cars in Colorado that are 10 years or older are tagged TMU so there's that.

The stock wheels had pretty bad corrosion issues from what I've seen, minor.

Cat back doesn't mean much, usually a first mod, STI means budget, don't worry.

People make a VERY good living buying at auction, cleaning, flipping so yeah you're right there.

Re: Should I Fly: 2005 Aero Manual $7200 118K

Whoa? Can anyone else confirm this is true? Maybe my google fu is poor but I could not confirm this is some type of statewide policy...

It would seem Colorado would kindly like you to not sell a car within it's borders, or suffer crippling devaluation
