Statistically, what are the odds that it will happen to you at all?

If you have other options, you can be cautious, but personally, if I had to drive the 9-2x, I'd keep the airbags engaged. The chances of serious injury due to a lack of airbag deployment are greater than the chance of serious injury due to shrapnel, if I'm allowed to talk out of my ass.

Calm your tits.

You're probably not going to crash, and even if you do, you're probably going to be fine.

With all due respect, you are talking out of your ass smile

They're called SRS for a reason:  Supplemental Restraint System.  Meaning, if you're wearing your seat belt they are -in theory- not necessary.  For the vast majority that do wear their seat belts, any risk created from the airbag is not worth it.

What we know about the Takata bags is that they degrade over time.  So the longer  we wait, the more likely it is to happen.  What are the percentages?  I doubt even Takata has a good handle on that.  What percentage chance are you willing to take that a bomb will go off in your face or in the face of whoever is sitting next to you?  GM has decided that it's too dangerous and is taking the expense to overnight letters to 92x owners.

My 92x is getting parked.

i say we listen to the competitor!

just turned off the air bag in my e30 star

Well, then, I'll wait for my letter.  How long should I wait for it to not show up before I can drive again?

I love how this is limited to coastal regions...not like the Midwest ever gets ridiculously humid.  star

I'd imagine that the 2006s aren't included yet because they have a seat sensor. No person in the passenger seat disables the airbag.

So... my wife is saying that she foudn somewhere that the recall is not geographically limited anymore and that they're expanding the count. Anyone seeing that? Also, how the heck are we going to find a GM dealership that gives a shit about performing a recall for their red headed step-children?  lol

I never got around to doing the control arm recall, but I did investigate it, and there was a site to locate GM dealers that worked on Saabs.  In Denver, it was (is?) Elway Chevrolet

See post #49 in this thread. But yes, in Denver it still shows as Elway Chevy on Colorado. I haven't done the control arm recall, nor do I plan to- my car was purchased in Michigan in May and was in Denver by October that year. But the airbag recall I will once details are known.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

Just curious, and wondering how insurance companies will respond in the event that:

1) an insured owner has a vehicle on the airbag recall list
2) is directed by the car company to disable the airbags until the recall work can be performed
3) owner dutifully disables airbags as instructed
4) owner is involved in an accident during the interregnum between disabling the airbags and the recall work being performed

????  Anyone in the insurance industry that can chime in????

Orly? Why then don't they disable your airbag if your seat belt is on? If for the vast majority of cases the airbag is creating more risk (when your seatbelt is on) this would be a much safer solution, right? Well, clearly, it is not.

Airbags are extremely dangerous if you don't have your seat belt on. Any collision is extremely dangerous without your seat belt on, though, so it's kind of a moot point. Airbags in conjunction with seatbelts are very effective. They are designed and tested to work in conjunction with - not in lieu of - seat belts.

My personal anecdotal evidence supports this. Both my good friend and I walked away with no injuries other than minor bruising from a head on collision with a tree at ~40mph. We had our seat belts on, and the airbags deployed. Without the airbags, we likely both would have experienced at best extreme whiplash and at worst possible neck/back injury and paralysis.

That's actually not entirely true. FMVSS rules originally stated that the airbag must be powerful enough to stop an unbelted male. Thus, airbags were technically more powerful than they would need to be to cushion a belted driver, causing issues for those of smaller stature that typically sit much closer to the steering wheel. As it turns out, the rules have been relaxed (apparently) since I was in the auto industry, but certainly the technology has evolved to multi-stage airbags and unique deployment shapes to alleviate that.

Some interesting info here, even if the website is reminiscent of geocities: http://www.hork.com/Gallery/advancedairbags.php

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

Not that  I know anything when it comes to car safety, but from seeing several crash tests it appears airbags prevent you from smacking your head off of pillars, steering wheels etc. I can definitely see how a proper functioning airbag will lessen the likelihood of injury in the event of a car accident.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong otherwise I will rip out all my airbags for time attack  biggrin

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

I completely agree with the spirit of Chris's comment.

Having said that,  the concern I have in this case is that I don't know what to check on my airbags or how to check them.  I don't know what to look for. With the control arm recall, I knew what the issue was, and basically what to look for. I don't even know where to start with this one. I wish I could pop something open and take a look at the part of concern.

To be perfectly honest, the thought of being in a relatively minor accident and looking over to see my passenger all torn up makes me feel sick.

That's one of the reasons why this is so scary.  There's no way to know until you're picking bits of metal out of your eyelids.

I never checked my VIN in the GM recall database back when the control arm thing was going on because I was replacing them anyway...I'm still listed for that, but not for the airbags.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

Currently, our website does not have recall information for your 2005 Saab 9-2X
Results last updated: Oct 23, 2014

Note I called my local service center as the GM recall VIN lookup wasn't providing a search for me, turns out it wasn't in Firefox, but did in IE.  However, my dealer said it could take some weeks for the info to come through, so those of us on top of this (since the Feds. changed the info just recently) might want to check again later...

It would be great to hear from anyone who does show up as recalled for the airbags.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

I just contacted my local dealership that "handled" the control arm recall for my 92x. So far, they haven't heard anything about it  hmm so I asked if they knew if passenger AND driver side were affected/etc, still nothing. They basically said, "wait till you get a letter and bring your car in." I'm often driving my soon to be fiance in the car with me... like Kornfeld said, it makes me feel sick thinking about what could happen. I think I'll be pulling my SRS airbag fuse for now, from most of what I read, that will disable them. If this is wrong, PLEASE correct me!

Welllll yes and no. http://www.fredbeanscadillac.com/ this is the link of a dealership near me that used to be a Saab dealership, and still kind of is. When you go to the fredbeans website, you can click the Saab link and it will take you to this Caddy dealership. Also because I grew up in the area, I know they service Saabs, so that's the only way I know about this particular one.
