Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

http://www.ibtimes.com/takata-airbag-re … gs-1652302

Has anyone gotten a recall letter? Sounds like only residents in the Gulf Coast area will be getting recall notices.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

Have not, and was not aware. Thanks.

And critics argue that the NHTSA hasn’t gone far enough. For now, automakers are under so-called “limited regional recalls,” based on the assumption that the risk of airbag over-inflation and rupture is due to high humidity. So instead of issuing blanket recalls for all vehicles, they’re limited to more tropical climates, like Florida.

“The only thing a geographic recall does is it saves money, it doesn’t save lives,” Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, an independent consumer rights group founded in 1970, told International Business Times by phone on Thursday. Ditlow points out that some automakers are taking their own no-risk action and recall all affected vehicles. “Just take a look at what BMW is doing. They’re saying, ‘we’re not buying into these geographic recalls.’” Instead, BMW is taking all affected models (see below) back to fix the problem.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

I was trying to get to the NTSA website to see if there was a recall last night when I first saw this on the news, site crashed multiple times.

Recall is only for southern coastal locations so far because all of the propellant canister failures are believed to be related to higher temperatures and higher absolute humidities (water content of the air) .  This decision was highly criticized by Clarence Ditlow of the Center for Auto Safety b/c cars are not restricted I their operating location.

Saw some images of the injuries caused, as well as an interview with a survivor. The injuries are kind of gruesome, essentially the same as military shrapnel bombs.  Since I always wear my belt, I honestly would like to disable my airbags ATM.

I live about an hour away from the Gulf Coast and I haven't received anything yet. Sounds like it's time to start taking some initiative.

"Takata is claiming only high humidity will cause the air bags to deteriorate and eventually malfunction. Yet one of the fatalities linked to Takata air bags (shrapnel from the air bag cut a women, causing her to bleed to death) occurred in Richmond, Virginia in 2009. That same year another women was killed in a minor accident in Oklahoma from an exploding Takata air bag. Another air bag incident, also involving hot plastic and metal shrapnel, occurred in Los Angeles just three months ago. The first reported injury related to shrapnel from a Takata air bag deployment took place in 2004 — in Alabama."

What about Kornfeld and others along the coast? SF is about as foggy as it gets. Not hot but certainly has the moisture in the air.

Yikes! Oh and I forgot - my car's first owner lived in Texas. Don't remember what part without double checking Carfax but that's a bit scary that I could have a bomb of sorts hanging out in front of me instead of something meant to protect me.  eek

It's weird that the first article is from two and a half months ago, and the second is from a month ago.  Is this suddenly really being promoted elsewhere, or are we just super late to the game?

It just blew up big on the news recently.  I think they expanded the recall.

They had a guy on there that pretty much had a scar from next to his nose to his forehead from shrapnel.... pretty crazy.

Like it doesn't get humid elsewhere....

Great.  Well, knowing there's a bomb in front of my face might make me a little less aggressive as a driver.

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

The list here:

http://www.ibtimes.com/takata-airbag-re … gs-1652302

is very different than the list here:

http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Press+ … ate-action

There isn't any mention of Subaru (or our cars) on the NHTSA site.   confused

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

From the article in today's New York Times, it looks like they are limiting it to those states because they don't actually have enough spare parts available to do the repairs on a full recall:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/21/busin … iller.html

and an article highlighting Fuji HE vehicles incl. the 92X:

I've paid a bit of attention as the Takata airbag recalls have expanded; that last link is actually the first I've seen Subaru mentioned. Guess I need to pay more attention!

This article claims it is just passenger airbags for '05 Subies, and states the recall is only in limited areas (though the investigation is ongoing):
http://www.aboutlawsuits.com/subaru-tak … all-69250/

but apparently 2004 models are not limited by region:
http://www.autonews.com/article/2014070 … rs-in-u.s.

Sheesh.

arrow-up Seriously. I'd assume that when analyzing for the recall they would have checked those airbags as well - however I also would assume that our airbags would work as intended and not as bombs.  shifty

Not that I've found.

http://www.cars101.com/recalls.html#impreza

Per this site, I see the Airbag issue listed for '05 but not '06 (which has an airbag wiring recall on 7000ish units).

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2005/sub … a/recalls/

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2006/sub … a/recalls/

Given the disparate info and the fact that I haven't received any official mail, I'm inclined to think the majority of us are ok (or that the government is prioritizing larger vehicle populations due to limited supply...).

Re: Killer Air Bags!!!!!! 2005 9-2x!

Millions of vehicles recalled? There's going to be a supply shortage for sure; I can't imagine a manufacturer carrying that much excess inventory.

Prioritizing by vehicle manufacturer is completely unethical, so the best thing to do would be to determine the cause of the failure method and start there.

Putting on my tin foil hat for a moment - if the airbag manufacturer knew there was a problem with heat/humidity and that they wouldn't have enough supply, they could have released the update for the tropical climates (knowing it wasn't just in the tropics) as a stop-gap while they increased their inventory for when the data inevitably showed it was a more widespread problem. This would make them look like they had been compliant the entire time, just made a mistake on the scope of the problem.

I've never been a fan or airbags for that exact reason.  And some engineers I know that developed airbag systems feel the same way.  But they go so far as to disable their airbags since they claim that there are far more injuries caused by airbags than are prevented.

I wish they were designed to supplement seat belts (as the name SRS implies) rather than replace them- it's already law that you have to buckle up, so why require the bags to stop a 95% unbelted male? The newer "smart" bags are better, but they are still more powerful than they need to be.

Fuck me.  I had always felt like anti-airbag people were conconspiracy theorist-types.  Do any of you have disabled airbags? Why or why not? I need to do more research on this.

As a counterpoint, I've never heard anyone at work (also all engineers) talk about the need to disable bags.

FMVSS rules are the primary reason US Market bags are so feckin over powered.
