Where to buy clear headlight film?

Hey,

Since I just had my headlights wet sanded and polished as I posted in my PMR thread, and I don't anticipate the need for baking my headlights again since they're already painted and held up fine over winter, I would like to protect them w/ some clear-bra or similar clear film. Have any of you guys bought and installed such films on your headlights? Where is the best buy to buy good quality clear film to apply on my headlights? When you search for 'clear 3M film', 'clearbra for headlights' etc., there are a plethora of products and places to buy so I'd like to see if anyone has had experience w/ a certain vendor or product that they'd recommend.

Previously I had clearbra applied to my headlights by a tint shop but I feel I could do this myself for cheaper. I'm looking to do my fog lights as well and I've gotten quotes from 2 tint shops, both for $120 for all 4 lights so I don't think that's a great deal.

Let me know what you'd recommend! Thanks as always  embeer

Just searched there - they don't seem to have any headlight film - at least not listed on the mobile site w/ the Saab 92x search criteria to narrow down results.

I'd be fine w/ just an appropriately sized sheet of the film too.

Something like this maybe? 12"x60" roll of 3M clearbra material on Amazon. Reasonable price at $46 shipped?

They are based here in San Antonio and they will do cutouts for anything they have on file (they have a 92x on file).
Stuff rocks and I wouldn't drive down a mile of highway without it protecting my headlights.

Right on, I think you had mentioned that brand before but I had forgotten what it was. The kit which includes headlights and fog lights is $70. I guess it's just a matter of if it's worth another $20 to not have to cut the vinyl yourself. I'd probably say yes.

Thanks for the link.

arrow-up right on, thanks!

Any opinions on Lamin-X? They sell a 92x headlight and fog light kit for $50. Someone on I-club recommended it on my post there.

Re: Where to buy clear headlight film?

I run a Lamin-X kit on my Audi, and have had them on there for years.  I'd avoid the fog lights, as they cloud overtime due the small housing and the heat that the film is continually exposed to.

How long did it take for the fog light film to get foggy? The reason I'm even looking into changing things up is the yellow film I have over my stock fogs got a bit discolored after about a year and a half of running them. If it lasted that long I'd be fine w/ the Lamin-X, swapping out the fog covers wouldn't be difficult and you can buy them separate.

Mike, what's your experience w/ Lamin-X?

Re: Where to buy clear headlight film?

arrow-up my Laminex film has held for about 2 years on the Saabarus headlights before they started to get hazy. I actually need to get new film now, as it's beginning to affect lighting performance.

I'm using a clear 3M film that I bought on amazon. I took it to the guy that did my tint and he put it on the headlight and A-pillars.

Re: Where to buy clear headlight film?

I ended up going w/ the Lamin-x films. Going w/ clear instead of yellow for the fogs and ordered some LED bulbs to replace them so hopefully the film won't get burnt and discolored like my yellow had. Hope everything gets here soon! Thanks for the input everyone.

Re: Where to buy clear headlight film?

Got the Lamin-x films last Friday and will be installing tomorrow night. Any recommendations or tips from experience other than what is in the directions? This is my first experience w/ films of this sort. Luckily, it's a 2/5 difficulty rating so it should be pretty painless.

Here is how discolored the fog light film had become. I just went w/ clear for the fogs this time around and got a white LED which should help since it won't be as hot. Would've gone yellow again but yellow film + LED bulb = green.  biggrin

Re: Where to buy clear headlight film?

Recently had to remove the film protecting my driver's side headlight.  Not sure why, but the UV protection on it had completely failed and it had turned a dark purple from the sunlight.  Looked like the car had a black eye.  Thankfully was able to remove the sticky crap with goo gone and a plastic razor blade.  Looking around at available choices today, most seem to not mention UV protection and Xpel no longer sells headlight film (maybe if you call in?).  I went with a set from Weathertech because they specifically list UV protection.

Run through the site.  When you choose the 9-2x it doesn't list headlight film as an option.

Ah, you're looking for precut, not just headlight film.  I tried precut for my current car and didn't like how positioning was so critical.  The result was not to my satisfaction so I peeled it off and redid the job with bulk and trimmed to fit.  The bulk is cheaper too, just be sure to get sufficient width and length to cover.
