Thanks! Will look even better once I get around to buying new wheels and throwing 295 tires on the back. Lowering a bit certainly helped though.

Your chargers definitely a "less is more" kind of car. Keep it simple, looks good.

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Anyone done a pitman/idler arm replacement before? I've been searching the mopar forumz and youtubez for how-to's to see if this is something I can DIY. Looks like most of it is straight forward but that removing the pitman arm can be a p.i.t.a., even with the pitman puller tool. Any insight?

If you have the room, it is easy.  Put the puller on, tighten it down lots, then give the pitman arm a good solid hammerwhack on the side where the puller arms aren't.  Works fabulously.

Right on, maybe I'll give this a go myself then. My only concern is getting both arms removed since working on an almost 50 year old car is never as easy as one hopes it to be. ha. The long-tube headers don't provide much clearance for working but if it's on the lift any work from below will be easy. I'll keep le forum posted. Hopefully after this I can finally get (and keep) an alignment for the front.

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Finally got around to ordering the pitman and idler arms from Summit. The Charger is in the shop today and they'll be installing those parts, checking to see if it needs any other steering parts to hold an alignment, and if all goes well, having an alignment done.

Fingers crossed she'll be back on the road and feeling much better by the end of today.  cool

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Picked up the Charger yesterday - all that needed replacing was the pitman and idler so that's good and she is now within alignment specs. The before specs for the alignment that were out of spec and leading to the tire wear were -1.5 camber on both front tires, and total toe in of -.32in. Ouch.

Now I just have to find a time to take it out when it's not 100 degrees and boiling lava hot outside.

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Cars and Coffee with mi amigo's new to him E46 M3. He let me take her for a quick test drive after the show, lived up to the hype, so good. Love the sound from that straight 6.  driving

Also, I've been eyeing different wheel/tire setups for 2nd gen Chargers like mine and there was a guy there with 295s on the back of his 69 Charger. This is what I want to go w/ big_smile. Didn't get to talk with the owner since he wasn't next to the car to talk about if they rubbed at all but the general interwebz consensus is these should fit fine under the 2nd gen w/ the right wheel offset.

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Got to drive a 2016 M235i, grey with dark grey wheels, 6 speed, similar i6... Super fun.

Fast car, but it actually couldn't keep up with the 92x on about 3 miles of highway 1, I really got away in the corners.

Not sure how different the suspension differs on the older m3, but I feel like it's pretty similar.

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

arrow-up Tis the plan!  cool w/ some black steelies, 15x10 w/ a 5 inch backspacing should fit perfectly with the 295s.

Miles, I thought the E46 handled really well, wasn't overly electrically handicapped like the newer bimmers and the shock/springs were well matched, stiff but not overly so, that it blasted through the few corners we took it on. At least compared to my over-sprung h-techs on stock struts that makes things a bit bouncy. ha.

Awesome Charger! Really nice resto work, especially the undercarriage and floor. Your friend's E46 looks clean, too. Love those cars, they're SO much fun.

The I6 (N54/N55) in the 35's is a torque monster that has just about as much in common with the E46's S54 as the 2.5 in the Linear does with the 2.5 in the STi. The S54 has less torque than a new 328i, but revs to the clouds and sounds like sex. Totally different experience.

IMO, if you got away from that Bimmer, it was because of your/his driving. A properly driven M235i would *spank* a WRX or STi in the handling department. Balance, grip, steering, response, all go to the Bimmer. Straight line speed, too. I'll give the corner exits to AWD, tho. Start throwing mods at both cars, and the BMW's lead gets bigger.

I've been able to drive it a few more times since then and I can confidently say it (to me) doesn't feel nearly as planted, controlled, or grippy in any corner that requires speeds ~30-45mph  where the Saabaru will just keep on gripping in those corners. It might be me not knowing how to correctly drive RWD in comparison to my own car, but it feels sooooo much less grippy. I was also driven in it by the owner while he went fast and it felt like it had the same amount of grip as when I was driving it - why I think it wasn't my error.

Possibly we both don't know how to drive it correctly? But in my experience my car had far more grip in almost every corner except for massive ones. Downhill, sharp corners were not its strongsuit.

Re: MOPAR OR NO CAR! -ikbrown's 68 Charger

Not sure what your mods are, so it's definitely possible. I was making a stock to stock, equal tire, equal driver comparison. Maybe a 2015+ STi would be able to come close, if both cars were driven/modded equally. Haven't driven one yet, but I hear the handling is MUCH better in the new STi versus the previous generations.

I have no suspension mods and the m235i is completely stock.
