Re: Soon to be gone BMW 328, replaced with?

I love coming back to this build and seeing all the fun progress on this great car. It's one of my favorite builds.  banana

I'd love to see pics of how the car looks now that it has settled lower. Those wheels look great btw. I liked how it sat in the earlier pictures but a little lower must look absolutely killer. Keep the updates coming!  up

Those look awesome.

Snapped this real quick, gives a better idea of wheel gap in the front.

The Powerstop pads suck, they lack initial bite.  Going to my trusted Hawks which were on sale and installing this week.

Good deal on the HPS, should work well for your setup. I run the HP+ on the Elise and love them. They're great for street and track, but they are eating my rotors.

It would be about a $2500 car.

But it's got about $15k in upgrades.

I bought it to take the engine out and swap into my car.  I already sold all the other upgrades I didn't need.  I will have never even brought the car home or register and insure it.  It's being parted on the spot where the engine is being installed.  At the moment my out of pocket for the car+the labor to swap engines is $500-800(it might hit $0 soon).  The engine alone has $3k in machine work and labor(high end balancing and blueprinting, porting etc).  This saved me $5k in having this done to my 172k mile engine.

Re: Soon to be gone BMW 328, replaced with?

I can see how this would make good financial sense, but isn't it a bit tragic to be parting out such a clean example of a car that's getting harder to find in good shape? Tell me that car had significant issues and I'll feel better about it.  hmm

It's a base '00 with 140k.  It's not that rare and although rust free it's got its issues.

This wasn't even my idea.  The seller posted in my build thread to buy his car to take the engine and part the rest.  Even he knows the car itself is Meh.

I will have a Cobb type hand held tuner with an e85 and 93 pump gas tune to switch between.  I should have about 310-325whp/370tq on 93, 350-370/415tq on e85.  The block can handle 500 but it's silly for FWD.

It's a stupid car because so much money was put into a very unappealing version of a 9-5.

Great for me of course.

Today sold my 172k engine with pickup at the swap location.  So as of now I have no money spent to make this happen.

Re: Soon to be gone BMW 328, replaced with?

Found another Saab for you Jameson. It has a lot in common with my old NG900. The current bid is sadly low for how much work has been done. It would be better with the Viggen seats and balance shaft back in it.

I know of that car, doesn't really do anything my Viggen didn't do.  Really doesn't do much for my stable.  My wagon is superior to my Viggen in every way except for looks but makes for a sleeper.

Re: Soon to be gone BMW 328, replaced with?

The engine swap took place.

I cannot really comment on the value of the work just yet.  Not only am I on snow tires, but the stage 5 tune which was on the '00 ECU does not play very nice in my '06 as it has lit up my dash with all kinds of faults.  That is to be expected as there were changes to the 9-5 from '00 to '06.

To solve this I have a hand held tuner coming which will be specific to my '06.

I will have three tunes to work with:

Pump 93
E85
Winter detune

I also installed a modern 7" touchscreen which brought Android Auto, BT, and a back up cam.  It's like being in a new 2016 vehicle   banana

Got the tune in and damn things a beast.  Gotta replace the MAP sensor and throw in the big fuel pump Monday.  Will put in an wideband and when it looks safe I'll dyno it and see how it does on E85.

Niiice! I'd love to see what that interior looks like now. Is it still a reasonably refined and quiet highway driver or does it feel like a Racecar now?

Its very comfortable on long trips and very quiet on the highway.  The engine being balanced and blueprinted, you often hear and feel nothing at 80mph.

Oof, that's one of my favorite things: a quiet highway cruiser. And a fast one at that!  banana

Re: Soon to be gone BMW 328, replaced with?

Been working hard dialing this car in.

Its got the big fuel pump in, waiting for the E85 tune to arrive this week.

The consensus is the turbo that came with the new engine is pretty meh and doesnt breathe well up top or take advantage of my other mods.  Next year I am going to move to a tubular manifold and an 19-20T 7-8cm TD04.  I should see a 20-50whp gain.

I also added a wing.

I painted the center console, put in a GS short shifter, Griffin Edition boots(contrast stitching which matches the seats), updated '09 switch pack and Hirsch pedals.

Under the hood I am still waiting to put on my extra valve cover which is to be powder coated.  I did put on custom GS oil and coolant caps and upgraded all cooling and IC hosing to silicone.
http://i.imgur.com/Oz01bG9.jpg

Next I did a facelift.  I bought brand new OEM headlights.  I went to the Retrofit Source and bought a direct fit HID kit.  You can see stock on the right.

I put in LEDs where I could, also put in new fog lights(LED'd those).  While I was there I got rid of all the chrome and replaced with the matte aluminum finish from the Griffin Edition.

Next up is window tint and then the rare matching silver finish roof rails.

Looks good!

In my opinion, I think black for the headlight trim would be better, since the rest of the car (Aside from the grill) is black. I'd leave the aluminum trim around the grill to emphasise it though.

I've seen blacked out ones and it looks cheap to me, it only works on an all black car.  The matte finish is a real nice middle ground as the chrome is just too much.
