I do have it! Fortunately the shop has been really good with these things in the past. Hopefully the luck continues...

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Haven't posted an update in awhile, but unfortunately it's nothing good...

Got the car back the day before I had my cross-country move, and everything looked good. Drove it about 20 miles before loading it behind my moving truck, and then got it out here to Portland. Within a dozen miles I started to notice a knocking sound. I did some data logging and the logs show knock issues, but the sounds are pretty cringe-worthy. The knocking sound dies down a lot when the engine warms up (after a few minutes of a cold start) so I was hoping that maybe I'm just hearing piston slap, but I'm worried it's rod knock. I will post the logs tomorrow, but here are videos for now:

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Always hard to tell w/the audio from videos as you know, but that sounds a lot like my Aero on cold start up.  There is however some sort of underlying knock of sorts that I seemed to hear in the videos that I don't get with my car.  I hope it's minor and nothing to be concerned with.  You just missed a multi-day power outage here in New England over Thanksgiving  smile  Hope your move went well.

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Some updates...good news! The knocking has definitely gotten worse since those videos, but seems to have stabilized. I called my shop in Boston on a last ditch effort just to see if there was anything they could do, and they said they'd get in touch with the engine place and see if they could send out an engine to Portland!

Fast forward a couple weeks and I get a call from the engine place. They want me to bring the car to a local shop and they'll send out an "adjuster" to have a look at the engine. A guy calls me later that day and says there's definitely something wrong with the engine, and they'll get me a replacement! Not only are they giving me an engine, but they're paying out for the labor cost as well banana I'm a lucky bastard...

The work is scheduled for 2 weeks from now, so in the meantime I'm cruising around in it hoping the engine doesn't seize and strand me at Mt. Hood (though there are worse places to be stranded).

Some photos of how it sits now...

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Been awhile since I've posted any sort of an update...still going strong at 165k!

The driver's side fog has been cracked and dead since I bought the car 4 years ago, and I finally got around to replacing it after seeing on the 9-2x FB group that the 05 Prius fogs work on our cars. I also replaced the bulbs with these yellow LEDs from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077BL5G7M

They are significantly brighter than the stock bulbs. I'm pretty excited to see how much of a difference they make for snow driving this winter! I just had to trim a bit of the fog light housing in order to make the new LEDs fit since they have a big heat sink and fan (before/after photos below).

Driver's side replaced, still stock on passenger side:

Still need to align the new fog. Also, I may buff out the lens on the passenger side since it looks like it's significantly blocking light output.

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Nice update. I too am just about to 165k on the clock. Interesting about the Prius fogs. One of mine has been broken since 2008 (?!)
To replace them, do you simply buy the round inner light portion as seen on eBay or the option with the full surrounding black housing?

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Just the inner light portion! This is what I ordered: https://www.rockauto.com/?carcode=14310 … rttype=803 (I chose "Regular Inventory" for $32.79).

It's a pretty straightforward process. I removed the black plastic surround by pulling off with the back end of a hammer. Removing the 3 retainer clips connecting the plastic pieces on the underside to the bumper cover gives you access to the fog from the back. Two screws hold the fog lamp assembly along with a plastic mount to the surround (seen in the bottom of the last photo). Once you unscrew those and disconnect the wire from the bulb, you can remove the bulb+mount through the front of the car.

When putting everything back together, I found it easier to put the plastic surround that the fog lamp assembly clips onto back in place (with screws in) before sliding the fog light in, since it's a tight fit. You can play around with the fog light / mount outside of the car to see how it goes back together, but it snaps in pretty easily so it didn't take to long to get the thing back in.

In retrospect, I might have ordered a passenger-side light since they're pretty cheap and mine is super foggy. I'm hoping that buffing out the light will improve things, but the cloudiness of the old lens seems to block a lot of the light from the LEDs.

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

The front bumper cover comes off so easily that I never messed with my fog lights with it still attached to the car.

FWIW, I swapped the OEM fogs with Hella Micro DEs, such a huge improvement - the OE housings and reflectors are next to useless.

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Good to know, removing the bumper cover would definitely make that job easier! I haven't considered replacing the stock fogs with the Hellas...might have to consider that in the future if I'm not satisfied with the current setup.

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

I have Hella Micro also, they are an improvement over stock, they can be found for reasonable money. I purchased a set for my first aero, when I built my second aero I purchased another set because I really liked the first set. They do require some cutting but it looks like you already did some cutting so no big deal.

Re: skidave's 05 Aero

Haven't updated this in awhile! I have a new ride to post about. It is also turbocharged and has the ability to drive all four wheels, but it's about 3 times as heavy and 3 times as slow. I rented a Kia Forte over the holidays while visiting family and it felt blazingly fast, so I know my concept of speed is totally off  biggrin

Anyway, here it is!

https://i.imgur.com/c1E71Tp.jpg

Still have the Saabaru but it's currently in storage due to the fact that my wife and I are traveling in this thing full time for the next year. It's been a blast so far! I'm sure I'm tacking on another decade to my working years before I'll be able to retire, but at least right now it seems worth it  lol

Most likely a weekend (or longer) getaway van. I'm currently 100% remote so I'm open to testing it out and seeing if I want more, but I don't think my GF would ever go for it. 2013 Sprinter 170 Extended, High Roof. Right now completely and sadly unmolested.

That's great to have the remote job in your favor, we've found it would be really easy to work remotely while on the road. That looks like a great base for a buildout! We love that our van is easy to maneuver in small spaces, but definitely wish often that we had more room. Lounging in anything resembling a couch is a distant memory to us  lol
