2006 WRX Shift Knob

Switched out my shift knob for a 2006 knob... looks identical (the leather is a little nicer but I suspect it's just becuase it's not worn shiny) but weighs more than double.
2005 aero knob - 3.3oz (94 grams)
2006 WRX knob - 7.2oz (204 grams)

The only visible difference is the plastic ring that holds up the shift boot is black on the new one but white on the old one.

~$40 at subie dealer, I'll be driving a couple hundred miles today and we'll see how much the weight helps.

Have you thought about the knob from a Legacy GT?

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

drove with the 2006 knob today... very nice. the stick has a lot more solid feel to it (not like i'm going to break it off when i shift) and throws a lot smoother. the stick doesn't seem to vibrate as much when in gear on the highway... just has a little 'buzz' motion to it but no more thrashing around.

highly recommended  up up

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

If you like the stock leather look, then this is a great upgrade. I didn't like the stock knob in my '05 (appearance and feel) and got the Subie MOMO knob and absolutely love it due to the weight. As iota said, a lot more solid shifting.

the 06 stock leather knob is actually heavier than the MOMO knob (as far as I can tell from online -- someone with a postage scale want to prove/disprove this?)

Make sure you brush the seeds and stems first off the scale first.  embeer

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

I took my stock knob of my 06 WRX to put the momo one I had on my 9-2X on and was surprised to feel how heavy it was.  I actually like the feel of the stock shift knob and will most probably be putting it back on.  I feel as though I have smoother shifts with the stock one versus the momo.  I do want to try the Legacy GT knob though...I really like the look of it and it feels pretty good (test drove a Legacy GT before getting the WRX).  Wonder how much it is?  I'll have to

Hey iota, the dealer said the wrx 5 speed only goes to 2005.  Is yours a 6 speed knob?

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

oh, and after driving with it for a couple weeks, i'll never go back to the lighter weight knob... this one has so much more solid of a feel when shifting, i'm very impressed.

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

Part number?
I bought 35022AC030 today, $47.  It doesn't seem like it is that much heavier than the Linear knob.  It is leather, so it is still pretty nice.
Oh well.

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

try weighing it... it will definately feel heavy in the hand -- it weighs more than a baseball does (shift knob: 204g, baseball: 154g) so if it's not heavier than a baseball it's the older 2005 knob.

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

I think what the problem I was thinking of was that it was supposed to weigh significantly more than the one on there.  However, the plastic linear knob weighs more than a 170g can of tomato soup I found in the kitchen, and the new one does too.  The leather one feels so much nicer that I was going to keep it anyway, but I was going to take it back and replace it with a heavier one if they had it.

I just couldn't bring myself to ever get the momo one, not because of cost, but because I don't want a cold winter knob and a hot summer one.  I really liked the old Z28 knob, it was huge.

Oh, and for those that think the Saab dealerships don't know anything about the 92x, the parts department girl at the Subaru store didn't know what a WRX was.  I had to tell her about the Impreza, and then about the 92x.  However, the parts manual has different nets for the WRX wagon vs the 2.5i wagon.  Can't imagine why, but they do.

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

you'd be able to tell if it was the new one, it's MUCH heaver -- i tossed someone the lighter old one, and when I thew them the new heavier one they dropped it on accident not expecting the weight. it's not like a brick, but it does weigh double what the cheap plasticy one did

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

If you are looking for extra weight but want to keep the original knob, try threading some 12mm x 1.25 lug nuts on the shaft before the knob.  The ones I got weigh 1 ounce each, so three of those plus the original shift knob yields about 6.7 ounces.

Is a heavier knob desirable?

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

I just bought the LGT knob...should be here next week.
I'll report with the differences.

Re: 2006 WRX Shift Knob

got the LGT knob earlier this week, installed it...
I like how it feels when shifting. More solid feeling due to the heavier knob. I sort of liked the stitching on the stock knob, but this one feels nice in your hand too.
Overall, I'm pleased.
