Geoff - read in 40 pages so far
Chris - Shinko's. Depending on the way we go / initially ship to (?) - I will definitely go near full knobbies for AK. 10" of travel will be nice as well.
Current state of affairs - planning the luggage setup / fuel tank additions along with designing a rear subframe, as the bike uses the rear-mounted fuel tank as the subframe.

I laid it down 2 weeks ago
I was making a left turn from a stop sign before dawn. Just starting out on a chilly morning... Cold tires. Later in the day I could see a wide swath of the road was a slightly different color from what I assume was an oil leak/ spill. Any early morning dew would have made that as slick as ice. I low sided, chain came off, scuffed up the handle bar, clutch lever, signals and foot pegs, but no serious damage. Bruised knee still hurts, bruised pride.
I walked home, got in the car and still made it to my haircut. I was able to get the chain back on and ride it home that afternoon.

Glad it wasn't any worse.

I did the exact same on my previous bike. Cold tires on a cold day, took a right hand turn and opened the throttle too much. Back end slid out, then bit kicking me the other way and I high sided. Maybe a 10-15 mph crash, but it left me a little sore and banged up the bike pretty good. The pride was the worst of the damage Glad you are ok man.

I've gotten squirrelly in cold weather with cold tires, happens before you can blink. Glad you're alright.

Yes, glad to hear it wasn't serious. I've crashed at up to 100 mph and down to zero. The slow ones can be surprisingly disproportionate in injuries.

Soooooo...got a new helmet. Scorpion AT-950
Really like it so far. I wasn't really trying to go for a modular, I just liked the look of the helmet in normal ADV configuration. The price was hard to beat as well. Initial first impressions, this helmet performs well above its price point. Feels a lot like an Arai helmet in terms of fit and finish. The modular feature has turned out to actually be pretty nice. It will be great in the summer or if I need to talk to a buddy on another bike without a comm.

I talked to a rep the first year Scorpion helmets came to the US. My friend even bought one (I got a free t-shirt). I thought it was a nice helmet and priced well below offerings of similar quality. The rep's explanation was that they deliberately were eliminating a few levels in the retail chain, so there were fewer points the price doubled from manufacture to sale.

Whatever they did seems to work. I haven't had the helmet long enough to know how it will hld up, but I see no reason it will not last a good while. It really looks and feels like a $400-$500 helmet.

AspenMike digs Scorpion helmets. I've never found one that fit well, but they seem of decent quality.

I have a narrow tiny head for my body type. I've heard some people say that they have either a Shoei or an Arai type head. I guess it just depends on your head shape. I heard a lot of complaints about my new helmet fitting very tight in the cheek pads. For me, it is perfect. My Speed and Strength helmet was VERY tight in the cheeks. It did eventually break in some, but after wearing the new Scorpion, the SS helmet feels too snug in the cheeks for me now.

These guys do a good job of properly explaining and categorizing head shapes if you need to shop again in the future: http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle- … elmets.htm
