Been there  big_smile.  They will fail to start due to electrical issues and piss coolant on the driveway guaranteed  facepalm.  Otherwise they are a blast.  banana

The back is not that tall either.  The engine intrudes pretty significantly as you can see.  Now mind you you can put the dogs anywhere in that.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

We were actually on the brink of buying a eurovan before getting the excursion. Given the old ones aren't quite the same, the new ones are a PITA to maintain, more than I felt like dealing with at the time. I'm not sure the older ones are good for 12 hours of 80 mph cruising at a time. Otherwise they fit the criteria.

I've been trying to justify a Roadmaster for years, in fact I'm talking with Shane in Denver for the 3rd time about his.  The issue is the back is just not tall enough, by his measurement it's 29" floor to ceiling.  My Outback is 31".  My great dane is ~36" at the shoulders.  Just won't work.  As of now I'm waffling on a 91 Landcruiser or an Astro, if neither of those show the promise I hope, I'm saying fuck it, banking the $ for the future, and renting for now.

these are not the cars you're looking for

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

I had been thinking of the Vanagons (especially the old Syncros- yum) for you, but until you contacted me about the Roadmaster, didn't know you were willing to get creative, fun, and old. What about a Toyota Previa AWD supercharged? I generally don't like Toyota vehicles (the FJ40, FJ60s and possibly the new Scubaru twins being the very rare exception) so I don't know a ton about them other than being intrigued by them. Probably a unicorn along the lines of the Syncros in good shape but it may be worth considering.

has two bubble domes; one in the front, while the one in the back is for quarreling kids, and comes with optional restraints and muzzles.

the engine sound causes people to think "the world's coming to an end."

There are three horns "you can never find a horn when you're mad." The three horns play the song "La Cucaracha."

The car also features gigantic cupholders

The car has various features such as bubble domes, shag carpeting, and tailfins. It also has a metal bowler as a hood ornament.

Tho Vanagons are interesting and possibly fun, gawd they are remarkably unsafe in a wreck. There are some interesting engine transplant options (VR6, or if one of the old air-cooled models, Porsche flat 6's fit there, in fact, as part of the development of 911's, they built a chase Transporter...with a 3.0 liter F6).  Still, if family (passive) safety is one of the considerations for a van, I wouldn't put Transporters or Vanagons on the list.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

Dunno where the count is at but I +1 on full sized wagons. I love my 9-5 wagon, and its not even that big. Iv surprised so many people with the amount of shit I can fit. And its actually comfortable to sit in the backseat. I love small SUV owners that say they have more room, total bullshit. The mazda 5 is nice i will agree.

I forgot about the supercharged AWD Previa.  On the list!  Wish the vanagons were safer, my wife would go for one.

The SC Previa sounded cool in concept, but I recall a pretty universal "meh" from car mags of its era.

Yeah, really is too bad on the Vanagons. You may want to consider the rare, front engined Van Wagon. With the drivetrain design it has, a host of modern engines (1.8T, turbo'd 2.5 I-5s, possibly the 3B or AAN I-5 20VT, VR6s) fit. I watched one tow a track 911 with bunked tire racks up to WGI, so they can't be too much of a slug.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

About now, I'll check in and say I have an '02 Chevy Venture that got a new Intake Manifold Gasket already.  It has some rust, but it runs great, and it's under $4K in value.  I know you are domestic-averse, but rigs like this get 26 MPG highway and offer plenty of dog headroom.  Yeah, it ain't pretty, but it's gonna run a long time now that the achilles heel has been fixed.  These things are out there.  It does what it's supposed to.  There's no manual trans, but you can pull decent-sized trailers, no sweat.

Waiting for the blow-back...

I owned a 93 Eurovan with the 2.5L 5 cylinder and 5 speed manual.  heart

Had its fair share of problems, however, it was the best thought-out van I've ever seen.  It was a GL, but still had a folding table built into the side, fluorescent lighting, snap-in curtains and an awesome backseat / bed with tons of storage under it.  Got 18 mpg no matter how or where you drove it  - and - the radiator/front support was hinged:  Pull out 4 6mm bolts and pull up and out.  The whole front of the van/radiator popped out about 6" to give you reasonable access to the spark plugs and ignition.  roxor

Oh dear jesus, unfortunately, I do.  This was the car I learned to drive with.  I absolutely hated it.  My parents had a '91 Land Cruiser just like this one!  It was the 4.0 L I6 and it was SLOW AS SHIT.  The monstrosity had 155 hp and 220 ft lbs (4 speed automatic) to haul around 4600 pounds.  Oh, and that's how much it weighs if it's empty.  Imagine how fast it's going to be when you have it loaded up with all your crap?  The motor, while it lasted for 110k miles of 90% around-town driving, sucks black donkey balls.  When I would drive my friends around, we'd get a kick out of me telling them when I was flooring it.  You could never tell because it was slow as shit no matter what you would do.  Oh, and it got something like 11 or 12 mpg.  HAVE FUN WITH THAT.

I also could have sworn it had 4 wheel drum brakes, but apparently I'm wrong.  It has discs in the front, and drums in the rear.  Whatever.  It felt like it had rice pudding cups on all 4 wheels that would spill out on the tires and slightly increase the friction between the tires and the road.  When the car weighs close to 6000 lbs fully loaded, it's going to take a while to stop this puppy.

The suspension was pretty decent for an SUV.  Though I only had driven a few cars up until that point and can't remember anything with clarity, it seemed to be a comfortable ride.

Finally, you should know that I dubbed the car "The Shitmobile."  The first few times I called it this, I got in lots of trouble since cursing was forbidden in our family.  However, it was soon adopted by everybody but my dad.  Even my aunt, who is the sweetest old lady you would ever meet, who works in the church rectory, started calling it The Shitmobile.

Please, for all that is good, do not get yourself a Shitmobile.  Mechanics have said to my parents that the car is indestructible whenever they took it in for maintenance, but all you'll be wishing for is the day that it drives itself at a cliff at a very leisurely rate.

It's a family car, chris, he doesn't need to drive it fast. He needs to get there, safely, and in a relatively decent amount of time.

Land Cruiser's are bad ass.

It will fit a family in it.  It will just have a hard time of getting away from an unsafe situation, stopping quickly to avoid one, and it doesn't even have airbags.  Not even for the driver.  Again, 12 mpg.  It will cost a fortune in gas.  Rent rent rent.

Aren't first gen Foresters fairly tall in the back? Land Rover Discos are tall, had one as a rental some years ago when the 3 series wagon got bumped into....it traveled really well, but mileage was meh.
