F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

I think it's finally come time, I've had my share of vehicles and it appears the minivan cometh.  We need something that can transport my wife and I, a toddler, a couple big ass dogs, and all our shit.  It needs to sit close to the ground, get ok mileage, and be comfortable for 12+ hour drives.  I'm at a loss, seems like it's inevitable, and thus, I'm embracing it.

The wife doesn't want to daily drive it and I feel the same, so it will be a 3rd car for trips and whatnot.  That means the budget isn't huge, probably $4-8k.  Looking mostly at Odysseys, Siennas, and Sedonas.  A part of me wants an Astro, but I like the captains chair setup better.  I like leather, DVD would be nice, as would a flip down rear seat (not sure when they started doing those), otherwise I'm pretty open.  Any of you poor schlubs in the same boat as me and care to lend some advice?

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

My wife and I made a pact to never, ever, get a minivan.   Ever. It was just as much her idea as mine  big_smile

Odysseys are everywhere and get good ratings from reviewers, but because of that they might sell for more.  I would get an A-Team van   wink

Good luck with your search.

Astro's are definitely less "soccer-mom" vans then usual minvans.

get AWD. My wife and I hate them to, but with 2 boys and all of our toys we will probably end up in a Sienna AWD in a few years.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

Astro, I have an 03 cargo I bought new and it's been very good to me. What I like is the simplicity, they made them largely unchanged for 20 years so they are pretty rock solid. Another plus is it will probably hold some value as they are still somewhat sought after in good condition because they are in a class by themselves. It will handle weight better, tow if you need, parts plentiful and it's not a "mini van". Now you will lose some refinement with this choice, and your lady may not like driving it. Under steer would be an understatement, but once you get used to it you can whip it around like a Mini  big_smile

If I'm looking at a regular mini van I'm getting an Odyssey, period.

Astro questions: How does the AWD do on gas? Did they put LATCH in the post 2000 models?  Scott, wanna sell me yours?

Flex looks good, but can't be had for anywhere near my budget.

Shit.  Didn't see the budget.

Why not just keep the car you have and add a cargo box or something?

Minivan?  Your life is over.  What difference do the details make?

Mazda 5? A bit more sporty, (though also less roomy than other options) but I've actually enjoyed driving them.

winner....I forgot about the 5. With a roof box it would be a great choice. If I don't get this teaching job I'm considering downsizing my work vehicle to one of these. Id get a Transit but they are still $$ and I can find a 5 for under $10k.

And you can get it with a manual and it's a bit more efficient than other vans.

I haven't read your thread so forgive me if I missed anything, but Honda Odyssey(not the buggy)? I drove one a few years ago for work and remember being pleasantly surprised.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

Yikes, I vote strongly against the Mazda 5.  A friend of mine bought one, and the back row of seats is stupidly small, as is the cargo area.  Plus, if you floor it on the highway, it makes a lot of noise and then doesn't speed up.

That second point may be true about all minivans, but then I'd say you may as well get something that actually has room in it.

Flex looks good, but can't be had for anywhere near my budget.

Honest reply on fuel economy: 15 around town and I got 21 mpg on a 1700 mile trip holding the speed limit.

My observations / opinions:
*  If you go for an Astro / Safari, look for 2004 & up.  The braking setup was upgraded to the same sizes used on the FS pickups and is awesome - along with increased towing capacity.
*  The van is one rear swaybar away from awesomeness - they really clean up the swaying feeling - drove one like that, but do not have it on ours yet.
*  There are several "problem areas" you can use to your benefit to talk the price down, yet are easy fixes:  Power door lock actuators, leaking HVAC vacuum lines AND ( a big plus ) leaky AWD unit.
*  If you buy one, you will love it.
*  LOUSY / crowded DS footwell; not a show-stopper, but the only real annoyance I have with the van.
*  AWD only activates when wheel slip is sensed; leaky AWD units and be JBwelded.

I just looked at our van on Edmunds and KBB:  Ours is loaded with every option - Edmunds has it priced at $4,700 private sale and KBB has it listed at $8000 - so you can probably find a reasonable deal in your price range.  (Two years ago) The dealership wanted $10,800 for ours, and after going over it and pointing out all of the "bad" things, they accepted my offer of $6500 OTD.  The rear end on our van was questionable - carrier and pinion bearings were bad.  I put a new torsen L/S diff, new gears, etc  in for $700 and have been driving it ever since.

I will have to look in the van, but I believe it has the LATCH system in our rear captain chairs and rear bench.

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

i'll echo the mazda5 comment... less expensive to get into, better economy than most, available in 5mt, will out handle everything in the minivan world (esp w/ a mazda3 rsb)...

yes the 3rd row is fairly small, but i honestly see that as more cargo room, and only as seats if really needed...

Re: F**K MINIVANS! I'm building a motovan!

If you can get into the newest style Chrysler minivan (08+?), they are HUGE and everyone that has had one that I know loved it for that, the stow and go, and other features. The 3.8l is a good engine, the transmissions shift like crap though.
