New Battery - Help

My car has been taking two cranks to start when its cold out, so I think it's time for a new battery -- I need to get one tonight at Autozone, does anyone have any reccomendation? I don't want to break the bank. Tell me everything you know about batteries.

NOTE THAT THIS IS A VERY OLD THREAD, THIS WAS TALKING ABOUT THE (LONG SINCE REPLACED) BATTERY IN MY SOLD 9-2X, NOT THE BATTERIES IN MY PIMPMOBILE

Re: New Battery - Help

Sweet Jesus! Two Cranks! That's way to much! smile

J/k....maybe I'm just used to cars that require like 3-4, but 2 is nothing IMO for a big temperature change. Get the battery tested somewhere, and if it's bad, get a printout and take it to your dealer. Free maintenance for 2 years and the warranty should cover that biatch.

By the way...consumer reports has a write-up on batteries from each place. If you can find it, it's a great resource!

Good Luck!

Re: New Battery - Help

Just as a further thought, I couldn't find the article, but AC Delco batteries are rated very highly. Look for a battery that is in your group that exceeds stock CCA. Don't necessarily go with the top of the line pick either.

Also, IMHO, a battery is also an item for upgrading...in my thoughts, by saving weight. A regular battery can be 40 pounds, while a lightweight one can be 8-15 pounds. That's anywhere from 25-32 pounds of savings in the front of your car in front of the axle. It's a significant amount to cut down. But it's hard to find a low weight battery that provides stock CCA and good life, so that needs to be disclosed as well.

WHatever you do, good luck to you!

Re: New Battery - Help

They are mostly of rectangular shape, usually black, and have 2 terminals, one positive, one negative.. :-P

I have been having that same issue in cold mornings, but since our batteries are brand new.

I wonder if anyone with the Growding mod has this problem ??

Would busting a cap on the Fuel pump help ??

Re: New Battery - Help

I found the CU article (Nov04).  Looks like the Advanced AutoParts "Autocraft Titanium" is a best buy.  If you have to get one from AutoZone, the DuraLast Gold looks in the DGS (not DGN) model.

Anyone know what "group" battery we have?  I can't find it in the manual.

When you do need a battery go with Optima. Around $130 but worth it.

Re: New Battery - Help

Why do you think it's the battery?  if you're getting good cranks out of it, I suspect it's not the battery, if it's cranking really slow, then yeah, I'd check the battery and the grounds.  Are you giving the fuel pump enough time to prime before you start?

Re: New Battery - Help

regarding the alternator issue -- on the way to the dealer (suspecting a battery issue would reset to my base stg1 map) i did the married stock mode base map (which was dumb considering the batteries low charge) so we'll see how it goes with that -- hopefully they dont notice or care

Re: New Battery - Help

Go lightweight if you get a new battery.  I put a Hawker Odyssey battery in my car a week or two ago; the weight is only 15lbs compared to about 34lbs for stock.  The outside edge of the front is a nice place to take off some weight...The model number is PC680.  http://www.odysseyfactory.com/  Just a thought...

Re: New Battery - Help

eek  First start, each and every time...  (let the pump prime for a moment, then hit the starter)

I did not read all of the posts....  Here's my experience:

Delco battery is the best part to come out of GM.  Years ago when I used to work in a shop, we had delcos with service dates going back 13 years.  They still passed a load test and were being replaced as a precautionary measure by their owners...

Interstate is awesome too...  Had many old interstates that were still kicking.

Stay way away from EXIDE made batteries (Sears Diehard).  EXIDE is the worlds largest battery manufacturer but instead of concentrating on quality, the just want to pro-rate you a new battery and keep you locked in.  They were the absolute worst with customer come backs < 1 year after purchase, and very few lasted beyond 3 years.

2 bits worth...
