Re: Ver7 swapped Desert Silver Aero

So i guess now its time to let the cat out of the bag! I would like to introduce to you my new motor. It's a Ver7 207  big_smile. I had the manifold and TGV's powdered a wrinkle orange. It took me forever to find the color and it came from Canada. The company doesn't make it anymore due to them "running out of materials to make it". I guess its made from dinosaur bone dust and ginger souls. Anywho, I picked it up with 35,000Km on it. Here is a list of stuff i did to it before having it put in by my Subaru mechanic buddy this past weekend. The car had 158,800 on the clock when the 207 went in!

-Powder coated manifold, TGV's and brackets
-Steam cleaned the block
-Gates racing blue timing belt kit
-Gates racing blue acc belts
-New 207 valve cover gaskets and associated parts
-LIC aluminum half moon plugs
-Grimmspeed 8mm intake manifold spacers
-Had injectors cleaned and flow tested by DW
-New timing belt covers (they were cracked  sad )
-AVO once piece turbo inlet
-T-bolts for turbo, intercooler and intake
-STi engine mounts
-Exedy OEM clutch
-Exedy lightweight flywheel

Parts that went on from 205:
-Cobb intake
-Invidia up pipe
-Cobb TBE

I can't wait to get her tuned properly for the 93octane gas and get it smoothed out more. It is a blast to drive and boy does it scoot now. Still not used to the 8100rpm redline. I took it to 7500 for the first time today and it was weird but man it was sooooo smooth. And the sound the VF30 makes when it comes online is just awesome! I also installed some bits last night that I have been holding onto for a little while. A Moroso coolant overflow tank I had powdered wrinkle black as well as a Moroso power steering tank (with sight glass) that I came up with and helped design with Moroso. Only 11 of them made!

Re: Ver7 swapped Desert Silver Aero

sweet!! Did you pop your ej205 or did you do the swap with your ej205 still working? I'm toying with the idea of throwing a ver8 in my aero but my 205 still runs strong. I keep telling myself to just wait til the 205 goes and worry about the swap then, but on the other hand the dark side keeps calling and I can offset some of the cost by selling my ej205 in running condition.

Did you swap in a 6spd as well or did you keep the stock 5spd? Total cost? I know the ver7 sells for quite a bit cheaper than the ver8 and ver9 so maybe I'll look into a ver7 if i can find a lower mileage engine like you did.

Re: Ver7 swapped Desert Silver Aero

It was never down. My 205 was still running fine, the clutch was going and the motor needed a reseal something bad. So instead of pulling the motor and spending all the money rebuilding it and it still being just a 205 i decided that i would pull the trigger on the motor I had wanted since day 1 of owning this car (the whole reason I got an 05 over an 06 Aero). I paid $3K otd for my motor. I was lucky enough to find a JDM importer local (like 15mins away local) and got it w/o the downpipe or TMIC (b/c i already had them). The only reason a Ver8-9 is a little more is bc of the turbo/exhaust setup...you need it all for it to go in. I like the Ver7 bc of the better internals and the VF30 is something else. I like the ver8 twinscroll turbo but i liked the Ver7 motor over the 8. I may eventually go with a ver8 turbo setup and then it will be a Ver7.5. As far as the trans is concerned, I still have the 5 speed, just with a new clutch and flywheel. It's still strong and I'm going to baby it until I can afford a 6speed swap.

Re: Ver7 swapped Desert Silver Aero

up EJ207s are fantastic. smile

As an aside...if I remember correctly, the V8 and V9 are completely different from the V7 in more ways than just the exhaust/turbo/forged bits.  I think they are different in almost every way.  Block, intake manifold, heads, cams, crank, oil pan...this is from memory, but I'm pretty sure they're completely different.

Re: Ver7 swapped Desert Silver Aero

My ej207 spun the 5 speed exedy oem clutch in 4th and 5th gear on the highway, easy. Hope you don't have the same problem. The exedy oem clutch is not up to the task on a stage 2 ej207/5 speed. Good luck with that. I'm looking at replacing my clutch with an exedy stage 1 HD or a southbend. I can still drive the car but have to be easy on the gas pedal.

Re: Ver7 swapped Desert Silver Aero

i havent had that issue at all yet. i have had this issue though!

Problem:
It has happened to me 3 times thus far since I have had the swap (done mid Dec). All 3 times I have been coming to a stop at a light (thank god). The car will shut off. The clutch will be all the way in and Ill be coming to a stop when the car shuts off. The first time it did it I thought maybe I wasnt on the clutch and just stopped and caused it to stall, but the 2nd time I had the clutch in for sure and was almost stopped. It's really weird and I dont want it to manifest itself into doing it while im on the highway. I had a buddy with a 207 swapped RS a long time ago that had that happen to him on the highway and did the car in.

Re: Ver7 swapped Desert Silver Aero

arrow-up how could a highway stall "do in" the car? That's no different than completely lifting off the throttle at highway speed (fuel injector dwell = 0).  Something else had to have gone wrong.
