Thanks for the input guys... Picking up my rails tonight and installing them.... when i get the motivation lol

By the way, I really like the STI decals on the rails!

Another option (much more work) is to take the rails apart and paint the feet (ends) body color and do a brushed finish or similar on the rails themselves.  Someone here did that.  I think it was Scargo, but am not sure.  A search would turn up some references.  It motivation is an issue though, I'd skip it.

Don't skip Dynamat or equivalent though.  It's an improvement and you'll already have the headliner down.

I do like the black look vs. brushed so I will probably just stick with them the way they are... not to mention the extra work.

When you mention Dynamat...... you mean just putting some extra sound insulation in the headliner?  To reduce noise caused by the rack?

Dynamat is not sound insulation.  It's a damping material.  It needs to be applied to the inside of the sheet metal.

arrow-up Mine aren't noisy without the cross bars installed.  They are much louder with anything attached to them.  It doesn't really bother me though.

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

The roof rails don't add any noise, and the Dynamat doesn't help with the howling I get with my crossbars.  Only the spoiler cured that.  With the round crossbars and low-rise towers, I'd get a howling that started at about 35 mph and by the time I got to freeway speed was enough to really be bothersome.  With the spoiler, it's only the loss of fuel economy that's bothersome.

The biggest difference I noticed with the Dynamat was that in heavy rain, it was much quieter.  The drops on the roof used to be the loudest thing:  now it's the drops hitting the windshield, and it's quieter overall.

arrow-up since you MUST seal the mounting screw holes (they're right in the gutter, most of us used silicone) you'll need a temp where the sealant can cure. Otherwise it's a no go situation.

Great write up. Houston's weather isn't being very compliant: 20% chance of rain... what's the worst that can happen?

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

So possibly a noob question, but why won't the bolts just mount into the pre-existing holes in those brackets??

They do. What makes you think that they don't?

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

I was reading the thread by JP92X on how he installed his and it looks like he pulled the brackets out and threaded them in.
Is that only if you want them permanently attached? confused

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

arrow-up  Subaru installed "dummy" brackets in the holes for cars with the Roof Rail deletes. They need to be removed in order for the rack feet to sit in their proper locations.

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

Sorry for reviving an old thread, it is a good one though!

Just bought a 92x and NEED roof rails. I have no issue finding the rails but what about the trim pieces to cover the gutters up once the rails are installed? The rails are all over eBay but no trim pieces. Are their special clips required too? Should I just wait to find someone looking to do a swap? Or should I just break down and buy and after market set that is just the cross rails mounted on 4 feet?

I'd like something low profile, not super noisy and I'm cheap (but not that cheap). Looking to have a basket and the ability to haul kayaks.

Any insight is appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

I've got no issue cutting them up! Just wasn't sure if there were enough clips to hold them back in place. Last thing I need is stuff flying off my car going down the highway....I've already had enough cars that did that....

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

Thanks for the great write up,  I've done mine now after seeing what you had to do to install.  I too have a sunroof but decided to do as little dismantling as possible in order to get it installed. I ended up removing the pillar trim and the visors as well as the handles.  But I did not remove the rest of the headliner.  This proved to be pretty doable, although the front section was a little tricky getting my hands and tools into the cramped space.  Here are some pics:

The silver cars look soooooo good with the aluminum exposed on the stock rails. Love my every day seeing it like that... up

Re: Adding Roof Rails to your 92x...

Finally got around to doing mine. Great post, huge help. Didn't even break a single clip! Like TPdrums, didn't remove the whole headliner, but was very difficult getting the pieces above the front windows out to access the nuts. Looooots of swearing and nearly crossthreaded bolts.
