A friend of mine has a couple of dozen acres near Lynchburg and recently had a range day. On the property, there is a small stocked pond with an island in the middle. He wants to build a gazebo on it but needed to clear it of vegetation first.  Our solution was spay it down with 1 year old gasoline and shoot tracers at it.  This was the result.

I will be buying 2 guns soon for home defense. First will be a shotgun and then a revolver later. I'm looking at getting a Mossberg Persuader w/ 18" barrel. It's this year's model and they had a new version replace it. Good deal at $260 I think. What do you think?

Your only mistake was buying a new shotgun.  I just got a wood stock 870 with a 21 inch barrel for $150 shipped and transferred.

When you look to get a revolver.  I cannot recommend Taurus enough.  Well build, good value for the money.  Buy used.  The Taurus model 67 is just about every thing a person wanting a home defense / take-to-the-range-a-few-times-a-year type of gun.  4 inch barrel, adjustable rear sight, 7 shots, and, you can practice with .38 special, then load up .357 mag hollow point for blasting the aforementioned "scary bad guys".

I agree with Pyro. A pump shotty and a revolver is a great reliable choices and the cheaper the better.  As long as the gun has been oiled properly and kept from moistures any wheelgun/pumpgun will do its job.  Save the money on something cool like an AR.

Yea but the Persuader looks badass LOL. I ordered the shotgun the other day and should have it this week.

The revolver is going to be a Ruger SP101 3" .357 mag.

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

There's an old video debunking the Hollywood standby "shoot the gas tank and the car will burst into flame."  They had a half-filled gas tank, out of the car, and shot it.  Even when they escalated to .308 tracers it only leaked.

Later in the video they shot a junk car with a Ma Deuce.  When they got to the incendiary rounds, it was a little more spectacular.  It *definitely* caught fire.

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

I did some detailed research a while back about blowing up cars, Hollywood-style (was making a video for summer camp...)

Most of the fireball is propane-filled plastic garbage bags, the black smoke is from diesel/oil soaked into everything, and if you want the car to flip, you weld a pipe underneath it, shove a stick of dynamite in there, and drive it over a 1" steel plate when you detonate it.  I'd imagine you would have better luck getting things to blow up/catch fire if you shot at propane bags taped to the gas can.  Just a guess, not that I condone that sort of activity  biggrin

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

Anyone have suggestions for a good lever action rifle? I'm looking for something reasonably priced and chambered in a caliber that will work for deer, elk, etc. .30-30 maybe?

I'm left handed and don't really want to special order a bolt gun so I thought a lever action would be a good compromise. TIA

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

really can't go wrong with a marlin 30-30.  My first centerfire rifle was a lever action Marlin in 30-30.  If it's just for plinking, and not for hunting, try out a 38 special/ 357 mag leveraction, or a rimfire if you want to be cheap. All are really fun to shoot.

If you have the dough, the BLR in 308 would be the #1 choice

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

arrow-up I agree
Still have my Marlin 336C & finally got smart & pulled the scope off it.  7lb rifles are so sweet to carry all day.

mkaz if you want to scope it you'll need a Marlin or the BLR as most of the Colts were top ejection ( which may be to your liking as a lefty )

.30-30 may be a tad light on elk.... unless you keep all shots well placed & within 100yrds using heavy 170gr ammo........ still feel that may be light though.

There is always the .45-70.   Load it up or down & you can take anything that walks in North America.

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

Cool, thanks for the input. I'll have to try and find a Marlin to check out. I hadn't thought about the ejection and where the cases might be flying so I'll have to check that out too.

The 336 sure looks like a good option, especially at the price.

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

Hola gun folks.

I'm looking into getting my first firearm, more specifically a .22 rifle. There is such a huge range of prices out there it is hard to sort thru the good and bad. I'll be getting the lovely IL FOID card too of course. My primarynuse for this weapon is "dicking around", ie shooting targets on a private property, shooting nuissance animals (beavers currently), and some range time.  I would like to by something under $200 if possible, that uses "normal" cheap ammo....

As for the nuissance animals. I used a neighbors old old .22 recently to take care of a beaver problem at my inlaws property. These big fuckers are making damns, a huge lodge, and taking dwn our nice trees (tress are now covered with chicken wire). It is really messing up the pond in which we spent a bunch of money to keep clean and healthy. It is also stocked with bass, catfish, etc...
It took me a couple nightd to finally shoot one, as thr gun isn't accurate at all. But I got one. Ww couldn't fetch him because he went under the ice but there was a lot of blood where he was standing (I wish I could have putting him out of misery with a kill shoot sad )
Anyways, fun stuff

Ruger 10/22 is pretty much the way to go. Good gun and tons of after market parts to customize it any way you want. You might be able to get a good deal used because they are very common guns.

Yes, a Ruger 10/22 is probably the first, second, and third place you'd look for a good .22.  There are otheres, but for availability of the rifle, and then accessories, it's hard to beat.

This is my  heart with her 10/22. She shot expert in High school. We've got 380's, SKS, AK47, M1 Grand, Winchester and Benelli shoguns, but the 10/22 is one of her most accurate and fun all around shooting guns.

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

Ruger is the best semi-auto on the market.  If you want bolt action, go with a savage MK-II.  They are known for having the best accuracy out of the box, and they have the only decent trigger, the Accu-Trigger.  really good rifle for the money.  If you want a bolt, go for the Savage. If you want semi auto, get the Ruger.

if you can find someone to transfer a gun (an FFL) for cheap, the best prices are always online.  I have a place up the street that charges 20 bucks.  Gunbroker.com is great, it's the ebay of guns.  Budsgunshop.com can have great prices, but they don't stay in stock very long.  Otherwise, you should wait for a gun show or look for a local neighborhood gun shop.

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

I have seen some very good deals at gun shows lately for .22.  Seems like people want to get rid of them for something bigger but I have been looking for one to put a can on there. The AAC Intergral 10/22 looks very tempting http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2011 … uger-1022/

She has a Rouger 10/22 w/ couple 10 round magazines, but got her 2x 50 round ones a couple years ago. She liked emptying those clips as fast as she could. Luckly its .22 ammo and it's cheap.

Online is great when you know exactly what you want and how to get it.  If you have a good local shop with a good reputation, I would recommend you deal with them, especially for a first purchase.  Having a knowledgeable sales person help you with legal issues, along with giving you a general rundown on how to safely operate and clean your weapon, in my opinion, will be more valuable than saving a few bucks on an inexpensive rifle.

Agreed and good point. If this is you first weapon, go with a good shop and find a range that offeres a class. You want to be safe and confident. I was fortunate to grow up in a responsible and active hunting family and may take for granted that experience.

Re: 9-2x The Gun Thread

I got to go to the range the other day with my new Savage FV-SR.  Zeroed in the scope, but only had enough time to do 25 yards.  I'm pretty happy with the accuracy using Blazer bulk.

http://imgz.us/?di=413247481356

Her are some pics of the rifle.  Like I said before, it's a Savage MKII FV-SR, it has a 16.5 inch threaded and fluted barrel.  It has an AccuTrigger, a nice hefty bolt knob and came with a one piece scope rail.  On top is a Vortex Crossfire, 4-12x OA with fine crosshair sitting in Vortex low rings.  The scope is just high enough to slip cap between the barrel and the objective end.  DIP bottom metal and trigger guard with trigger stop, Boyds' Target Hunter in Pepper Laminate The only thing it needs now is a suppressor on the front.
