NASA at Infineon (Sears Point)

I'm hoping to be out there in the HPDE1 sessions, trying to not embarrass myself.  I'm off to get the car inspected, and if it passes, I'm set.  Primarily, I'm trying to get signed off for solo so that I can help test our LeMONS car.

Is anyone planning on attending?  If so, look for a silver Linear with some numbers taped on the sides, and stop by if you find me.

Re: NASA at Infineon (Sears Point)

There's another 9-2X out here in HPDE1-2.  I spotted it heading out about ten cars ahead of me but I didn't catch it.

I caught it.  Surprisingly, another Linear.  I thought I was the only one fool enough to take one of those out here.  I expected it to be an Aero, and was looking forward to showing it my taillights.  Oh well.  I'm cleared for solo already, after only three of today's four sessions.

Re: NASA at Infineon (Sears Point)

Out again today.  The Powers That Be were satisfied enough that I got signed off to run group 3.

As a side note, I was quite pleased when my instructor from this morning commented that my car handled quite well.  When I considered that he runs a Time Trial "D" Miata, I took it as high praise.

Re: NASA at Infineon (Sears Point)

Starting to get ready for the next HPDE at Sears Point/Infineon two weeks away.  I need to get an inspection, and am considering the following before the event:

- replace the stock endlinks with the Kartboy ones I've already got.  The fronts can toggle over at the parking lot entrance by work, but should be OK on the track.
- replace the Hawk HPS pads in front with HP+.  I'll probably see how Saturday goes, and put them in for Sunday if I'm getting fade
- replace the Borla-replaca header with the OBX (Cobb replica).  This would mean running catless, but it is closed course.  I'd need to make sure I had my laptop handy in case I needed to disable the CEL.

I'm also in the dark about tire pressures.  I've got it dialed for the bikes, but tracking the car is still new to me.  The car is pretty neutral, even cornering hard, until I give it full throttle.  Then it pushes.  I don't expect to change that much, but think that proper tire pressures will help.

Re: NASA at Infineon (Sears Point)

Tried valiantly to get my friend's 1988 900 SPG ready, but ultimately failed.  The other driver on our LeMONS team had a running but troublesome car this morning.  This afternoon his clutch was sitting on the bench, with prospects for reinstallation iffy at best.

I'll be out in the Linear.  I did get the OBX header fitted, and although I haven't rescaled the MAF, I did have to disable the P0420 code.  It'll be hot tomorrow, so hopefully the brakes will be OK.  I had to remove the right side cooling duct because of the header.

Tracking a daily driver FTW?  I dunno ...

Re: NASA at Infineon (Sears Point)

It got warm, but not hot.  Traction was good, and I didnt' have problems with the brakes.  The tires are showing their unsuitability for the track, but are coping.  All-season with a treadwear rating of 400:  they're complaining.

The EL header improves power and responsiveness, and group 3, I needed all I could get.  I gog a good session in though;  one where I got free of traffic and had some nice, open track.  I was coming up on cars in ones and twos, they were coming up on me in twos and threes.  Other than an overzealous Corvette, people were mostly predictable and polite.

Back for more now ...

Re: NASA at Infineon (Sears Point)

Wet track for the first two sessions today, so it was my turn to pass.  Corvettes, BMWs, Miatas, Porsches.  It was slick as hell, but low power, all-season tires and AWD came through.  It was a lot of fun, and at greatly reduced speeds.  The practice on smooth inputs was appreciated.  Oh, and passing those cars.  That was cool too.

The third session was dry, and grip was really good.  We were moving along nicely.  Of course, I wasn't passing much anymore.  Oh, well.  It was fun.

The third session in HPDE4 saw a pretty messy situation.  The first dry session they'd had all day led them to be generally agressive.  A Ferrari over-aggressed into a Miata.  I think the Miata is a write-off.  The Ferrari had a smashed nose, but looked repairable.  Someone had a hundred thousand dollar weekend.
