Do you show your receipt at store exits?

Most times I do, but if there's a line to the receipt checker, I walk straight out, ignoring the "sir, sir..."

If you purchase a membership at a place like Costco/BlowJob's/Sam's Club, you are agreeing to their terms.  I'm not sure if they're legally allowed to stop you if you agree to this, but I'm pretty sure they could terminate your membership if you refused to let them check.

What stores?  Where does this happen outside of a Costco or other wholesale membership club?

And if they start to chase you, you can always lose them with the help of your nifty killswitch and that new blackout license.  amirite?

Re: Do you show your receipt at store exits?

I understand Costco has a certain 'right' to do this, and that's why I don't have a costco membership anymore.  The whole thing just bugs the crap out of me.  Lining up to prove i purchased something that I just purchased 3 feet away 3 seconds ago - it's silly.

When I did have a membership at costco I decided not to wait in the 10 person + lineup one day and just walked out.  My daughter, about 9 was carrying the one thing we just purchased, a toy for a birthday party.   The kid at the checkout stepped in front of her and ripped it out of her hands as we walked out.

Let's face it - the company is acting on the assumption that you are a thief.  I don't personally appreciate the assumption that I am a thief based purely on the evidence that I exist in the same general vicinity as products that are capable of being stolen.  It's insane.  In that instance it took a lot of willpower on my part to avoid punching that kid in the face, and had he pushed me even a little bit I likely would have done so.  Physically touching a man's young daughter in any way, just because they had the audacity to buy something at your store - it's a bad idea.  Had I punched him I most certainly would have seen it through in court, I get that I probably agreed to some sort of deal where I show my receipt when I signed up for a membership but I seriously doubt that I agreed, legally, to allow myself or my young daughter to be physically detained.

Maybe as a small business owner I should write in very small print on my invoices "failure to pay within 30 days will incur a good swift beating...we retain the right to cut off the thumb of any customer not able to provide proof of payment at all times" and then have customers sign all invoices.

Re: Do you show your receipt at store exits?

In 2007, shrinkage was reported at about 1.6% of sales.

Employee theft is a (the?) serious problem. The receipt checkers are primarily checking that every item you're carrying was scanned - it's a check on employee behavior as much as it is customers.  The intersection that occurs with self checkouts is probably interesting to police, and from a financial standpoint, has to be pretty interesting to study.

More than my right to not be detained, I try to exercise my right to not shop at stores so large they can't monitor employee and customer behavior in other ways.  As a single male, I suppose this is quite a bit easier for me than someone with a family to buy for.

It's interesting to hear about people being detained. My mother is a long time employee at Wal Mart and has made it clear that they're not even supposed to stop people they saw shoplift- it's a police matter.

No, Costco doesn't have a certain "right" to check your receipt, it is a term of the membership agreement that you agreed to when you purchased a membership to their club.

Costco Member Privileges & Conditions wrote:

To ensure that all members are correctly charged for the merchandise purchased, all receipts and merchandise will be inspected as you leave the warehouse.

Since you didn't like it you did the right thing and didn't continue the membership.  But don't bitch that they stopped you to check your receipt, you agreed to it.

I have an issue with stores like Best Buy detaining me to verify my ownership of a item by checking the receipt 10 feet from where I purchased and became the owner of the product.  Both of these are violations of my rights.  And I don't shop at Best Buy anymore because of this.

Re: Do you show your receipt at store exits?

What is a receipt? Is that the thing i crumple up in my pocket As I steal large amounts of tv's? You know the ones they won't let you carry to the register or get out without them getting it, or purchase without doing it at their register? And then i have to show a receipt for it at the door? Yes this is utter bullshit whoever thought up this idea is retarded.

If you attempt to stop someone who is shoplifting, or even SAY something to someone who is shoplifting, you will be (and should be, IMHO) terminated by most stores. The reason for this is liability - if that person was to turn around and shoot you when you tried to stop them, the store could be found to be liable, which is why they absolutely prohibit employees from interfering with anyone who is shoplifting. Even reports of your employees trying to stop shoplifters is enough to raise insurance rates, get kicked out of buildings that your business leases, etc
