I'm starting a blog about small arms, and I could use your input

And not just from the gun guys!

I hope I'm not overstepping my boundaries here...not my intention to advertise. J_M or iota, feel free to delete and PM me if I am.

I've had the idea for a long while to create a professional blog regarding technical information about firearms.
Particularly for the beginner or interested shooter. Mainly more introductory concepts that open up into more technical and in-depth explanations.
I've done a little pseudo-market-research, and it seems if I do it right, I could actually make something of it.

Keep in mind that this would be likely done by me and me alone, so I don't exactly have a lot of manpower for the project.

So, I come to you guys for a little advice.

1. If you were going to read a blog of such a nature, how often would you expect new posts to remain satisfied and to continue checking regularly? >1/wk? 1/wk? 1/fortnight?
2. What are the main things on a blog that first capture your attention? Anything besides pretty pictures or boobies?
3. What's a better word than "blog", because I fucking hate that word

Coming up with material is the most difficult part for me, since it's been a while since I first got into shooting and learning as much as I could about it.
4. What kind of stuff would you want to see answered? It doesn't just have to be beginner stuff, and feel free to respond even (especially!) if you don't know ANYTHING about the activity.

I have full podcasting capabilities, but I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to work that out.
Jason gave me an idea of doing basically a summary podcast at the end of the week/every few articles or whatever to avoid just reading the articles verbatim, but still having as much information as possible in print to keep it detailed and fresh.
5. Any ideas you would have for this would be phenomenal.

Re: I'm starting a blog about small arms, and I could use your input

First off, I suggest you buy me guns to do reviews on big_smile.  On a more serious note, I'd be happy to help with any of my knowledge and/or my limited supply of firearms.  Answers:

1. The blogs I check daily are the ones staffed by multiple people with big(ish) budgets, i.e. Gizmodo, Jalopnik, etc.  The ones that are run by an individual get checked about weekly.  So I'd say >1/wk would be rad, but if it's content that interests me, 1/fortnight is plenty.
2. Break the info down with headers and bullet points.  Maybe internal links for the readers that want more info to make it easy to peruse without being bombarded by big blocks of text.  Also alliteration helps.
3. Toughie, I really don't know.  Infogroup?  Non-audio-podcast?  Lesbian chat room?
4. Ammo comparisons, technical breakdowns of individual parts and their function, pricing, FFL info, gun related stuff (new hunter info, trap shooting, CCL), etc.  I'm just spitballing, I have a lot I can think of.
5. See 1-4.  And the part about buying me guns.

Re: I'm starting a blog about small arms, and I could use your input

I second what Hyper said.

I'm wanting to buy my first gun and would love to have that kind of "blog". For example, issues relating to how to get one (permits, buying over the net, etc...) best guns for beginners (why these are good, pros and cons).  Resources like where tonget good ammo and such.   How to tips? Basic maintenance, mods?

Anyways, that's pretty vague I know sorry.

Re: I'm starting a blog about small arms, and I could use your input

Thanks so far, gentlemen.
Feel free to keep them coming Hyperboarder.
Since the blog will (hopefully) be read by folks all over the nation, I'm going to at least at first stick with topics that cover most everyone (no state-specific stuff, but CCW and NFA would be fine).

The name is Smallarms101.com, and the logo will be a T-rex  lol (get it?)
Now I just gotta get good at art to make one  banana

Re: I'm starting a blog about small arms, and I could use your input

You could probably link to some state specifics, might not have to go through the individuals.  Transportation stuff would be good too (again, links) as some states are harsh on that.  Basic maintenance would be great, as would basic mods.  An optics section would be cool.  Maybe a collectors section too.  And of course building info (AR platforms, 10/22, etc.).

Explain in detail things like barrels and why you can't use certain ammo in them, MOA, old technology new technology, I would love a walk through on changing an a2 style AR15 with a stripped A3 UPPER.

Re: I'm starting a blog about small arms, and I could use your input

6. Another thing I'm working on figuring out is opening pictures for posts.
Since not all posts (most) won't be about a specific firearm, I have to use non-copyrighted material, I don't have a DSLR and can't afford one, and may not be able to take a picture of the subject in question, I've gotta come up with something.
Things like MOA and similar won't be that big of a deal (i.e. things with diagrams and graphs I can draw). The others, I'll have to get creative I guess

I always like to see step by step how-to's on dis and ass for different guns. Very useful for newbies and for complicated guns (ruger mkII unamused )

I'd be willing to help with that seeing as how I have a pretty good collection if you decide to go with it.

Would you be able to contact manufacturers to get picture permissions?  If not, how about some of the larger online retailers (Davidson's, Buds, Impact, etc.)?

Re: I'm starting a blog about small arms, and I could use your input

I am in your target audience (someone who has fired a few guns, but does not own any).

1. Probably once per week.  Any less than that and it loses its ability to become part of a routine.
2. Good content.  Boobies would detract from people checking at work.  Also, your/you're their/there/they're is important, but likely only to me tongue
3. "Cooter" is a good word.
4. I don't know how to answer this since I don't know enough about the topic.  Information on how to get started, laws in different areas, things like that would be useful to me.
5. Give me a job.

To add to Chris' #2 (snicker) I would suggest using a less mainstream photo hosting service (imgz or the like).  My work blocks photobucket, flickr, and countless others, which gets old.

Not really. I'm not a fan, to be honest.
He is a bit too "mall-ninja" for my taste.
But he does go out and shoot, and does see the importance of training and drills. So more power to him.
I just disagree with him on a lot of points

I would probably do some gear reviews and the like, but that would be a bit further down the road.

Well if you can fill the gap between Gunblast.com and Nutnfancy would be much appreciative.
