Re: Update:SLR Pics - Custom Color Matched & Polished Aluminum Roof Rails

So, how much of that paint you got laying around?
Cuz I don't have a gun, or a garage to spray in, and don't feel like paying the mopes around here to do that either.
Although the shipping might cost more than getting it done in the first place.  I'll have to look into that.

I bought a pint of it and used about 2 oz. If you can seperate your end caps from the aluminum piece (there are allen screws on the bottom, but they're thread locked and hard as hell to get out) it wouldn't cost much for shipping. I would gladly do it for you for say $30 if you covered shipping in both ways. I almost always get awesome results when I paint, but my booth isn't as good as a professional's so sometimes a small fiber will get in the paint or something like that. Nothing that is noticeable from even 1 foot away, but still something to think about.

Yeah the muffler doesn't fit the classy look I'm going for, but it came as a TBE. I'll weld a new muffler on when I find one I like, but nothing is looking good right now.

Re: Update:SLR Pics - Custom Color Matched & Polished Aluminum Roof Rails

Thanks to you I just finished installing my brushed aluminum roof rails on my silver aero  big_smile

Sanding them down was a PITA!  Took me about 2 hours to do each rail.  Sanded it down with 400grit wet sandpaper then reclear coated it.  Taking off the roof liner actually wasn't bad at all.  Pics to come...

Thanks for the idea man  banana

Re: Update:SLR Pics - Custom Color Matched & Polished Aluminum Roof Rails

I think it looks good, wish I saw this before doing mine. my snowboard rack is also aluminum. Do you have to use the cross bars with your rack?

Taking the headliner down was not as bad as I thought. It tokk me about 4 hours to put the rails on. I took my time , had a few beers and stopped to talk with a few neighbors. One did say, is that the car you just bought? Why are you taking it completely apart?  The next day he commented the rails looked good.

I wouldn't suggest doing this process on the car because the paint stripper will take off automotive paint with no effort.

Have you thought about stripping the endcaps as well so the entire rail is aluminum? looks kinda like a pontiac vibe roof rail right now. great job though and good idea!!  i would totally do this but i dont feel like going thru the whole process of taking everything apart again and re-siliconing.

Eqlized, I am really liking these. I already have installed the roof rails, but it would be pretty sweet to paint the ends red to match my car. How much do you think it would be to get this done in a shop?

eqlized, did you have to strip the black paint off the end caps or just rough them up with abrasives and paint them blue?

You don't want the stripper to get anywhere near the endcaps. They're raw plastic AFAIK. I taped that seam off as best I cold so I wouldn't soften up the plastic (I got a little on the bottom side and the plastic got gummy quick).

Rough them up with some 400 grit, prime, paint.

I have an APS exhaust now.

U of M has the largest alumni base in the country (and the world last I checked), I gotta represent.
