I want a rifle. Halp plz

So I got a nice chink of change back on my taxes, and I'd like to buy a rifle.  I have a .22lr, and its fine, but I would like to have some bang.  I had a marlin 336 in 30-30 for a while.  It was ok, but its kind of pricey to shoot.  I would like to find a good rifle in 7.62x39 because it's a more affordable round than .308.  Right now I am thinking about a couple different rifles.

Ruger Mini 30 (I really like these)

Rossi Single shot (I know they are cheap, bit I hear its a fine little gun for the money, and pretty accurate to boot, but I don't like the fact it is a single shot, but I like the fact I would swap out the barrel and have a shot gun for sporting clays)

I also saw a Remington 799 Mini Mauser that was in the same caliber, but I know nothing about these.

I'd also think about an SKS

I don't think I want an AK.  I just don't need that much gun (which means the RPD is out too), but I might be talked into it.

any one know anything about the CZ 527 carbine?

I would really either a bolt action or semi auto vs the break open single shot.  I lean towards the bolt action over the semi auto because of ease of use and cleaning.

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

Also, I'd like to keep the price of the gun under 700.  I am more concerned with the cost of shooting it, I don't mind spending up to 800 i guess on the gun, because guns don't really loose much value.  I also am cool with used, and prefer it to new.

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

I kind of figures he would find this thread.  We talked a bit on his AR thread.  Vance's is OK, and have tried to talk me into a Savage in a .308 or 7mm mag.  They do have a good deal on one, I think it was like 500 with a scope, it was a heavy barrel, but a nice trigger. its a model 11, fxp3 what ever that means.

I have even thought of getting another lever action, but in .38/.357mag.  it would be super cheap to shoot.  but very limited range.

Buy an AK.  You can get them for just over $300 and that includes two 30 round magazines.

They love dirty ammo and will never fail. spider

If you want a decent bolt action the Moisn Nagant will be cheap to buy & shoot.  ( just dont buy heavy ball ammo as  it nearly doubles the felt recoil of the 147gr surplus )

I do want a larger caliber and not have to worry about other states caliber restrictions on hunting

If i got an AK  it would be the Saiga 12 or 20 Gauge shotgun.  (convertd to belt loader like the RPK, because I can't think of a better zombi gun)  biggrin

I actually am thinking about this

form here:
http://www.raacfirearms.com/Bars_4-1.htm
Putting some stock in to this review
http://www.chuckhawks.com/bolt_action_7 … rifles.htm and comparing this gun to my options, and because I didn't like the CZ 527 I held.

I am having a lot of trouble sourcing it because it seems like most of the distributors do not carry their bolt guns unless its a .22.  I have a guy I did a lot of business with in FL looking into it.  His shop is just down the street from the main Importer for RAAC, and he can find anything one could want.

I think if I was going to go with a gun in 7.62x54, that I would have to go with the PLS "Dragunov" clones.  It's pretty much an AK with a longer barrel and a scope and can be had for low 600s.  Real Dragunovs go for a few grand but I would love one of those in .308 someday.

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

It looks like I may not be able to get the BARS-4-1  sad

They can inport it, but none of the distributors want to try to sell it because it "is not competitavly priced" eventhough I do not know how much it costs yet.  It's on the ATFs "OK to import" list from comunist- block countries, but it looks like I may have to pay a premium to only get one imported or wait to see if one of the other distributors will try and push it.  One I talked to had not seen this rifle and seem somewhat interested, as a bolt action in 7.62x39 is a very uncommon gun.  The only other being the CZ 527 so far that I can find.  And I can't imagine the BARS-4-1 costing more than the CZ based on the prices of their other products.

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

So I'm most defiantly on the hunt for a bolt action now.  It is the right direction to go if I want to get the accuracy I want out of a round like this, as well as simplicity of maintenance. Although I have two possible leads on sourcing a BARS-4-1, I am not getting my hopes up on getting one anytime soon (I may try to contact RAAC my self and claim to be a writer wanting one for an article so I can get it direct) what can go wrong right?

Others now in consideration are:
Remington 799
Ruger 77
Ruger Hawkeye
and if I can get a good price on one... a CZ 527 M Carbine

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

A bolt gun in 7.62x39 seems odd. There are some out there, but here's my thinking:

If you're getting a bolt gun, you'll probably be doing more precision shooting.
Most of the affordable x39 out there is Wolf, Brown Bear, etc.
You can find Winchester brass, but it's still target ammo.

If you're shooting precision, you probably won't be throwing a ton of brass, so more expensive calibers still aren't expensive as if your shooting regiment involves slinging a lot of lead from a carbine, etc.

The Sellier & Bellot 7.62x39 is good stuff though.
I would go with the CZ. They make absolutely fantastic rifles that are worth a whole lot more than they sell for. Very accurate weapons with smooth, reliable actions.

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

Bolt gun and that round just dont seem to make sense. If I were going with a bolt gun I would be doing a 308, the ammo isnt crazy expensive and your not going to be shooting a lot sense its a bolt gun. Precision stuff gets very expensive, mainly glass. If I were wanting a fun rifle in a cheap caliber is would be the AK.

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

Hmmm.  I just don't need a semi auto.  My .22 is semi and so is (and have been for all but one) of my pistols.  I just want a bolt gun, and I want it precisely because it is uncommon to have a bolt gun in this caliber.

and yes, Wagn762 if you check out the post right above your last (#16) you will see i listed the Ruger Hawkeye and Ruger 77. As long as they have a wood stock, I would but a Ruger, but their synthetic is absolutely fugly.  If you can find a savage in this cal, I would love to hear about it and add it to my list.  Right now CZ is at the top, but I'm still waiting till next week to hear back on the BARS-4-1 from RAAC

i've got a mosin nagant m44. it's fun, cheap to shoot, powerful, old, dependable, and unique. initial cost is also ridiculously cheap, like $115 or something.

A bolt gun for 7.62x39 might not be as odd as it sounds.  My reloading guide (Sierra) notes "In a good bolt action, the round has excellent accuracy potential.  It is worth noting that the 6mm PPC - considered by many to be the most inherently accurate cartridge ever developed - is a descendant of the ubiquitous 7.62x39."

Re: I want a rifle. Halp plz

Kap had a good point with the 5.45x39. that round is still pretty cheap to buy and you can even get an AR platform in that caliber.

But i would say go with a 7.62x54R rifle, its cheap ammo for plinking and you can find some good quality stuff out there for the more demanding tasks. The mosin nagants arent really the nicest rifles out there but if you get one with a good bore then just give it a nice trigger job, a new stock, then throw a scope mount on there and bam, you have an awesome rifle. thats my 2 cents
