'06 WRX

Probably better suited to a WRX board but what the hell...
I've come across rumors saying the '06 is going to get the 2.5L, anyone else see anything to confirm that?

Re: '06 WRX

I've heard that as well, and it says that it possibly will on www.cars101.com but I'm not real sure about that. On that cars101.com site, it says it will get the 2.5L Turbo but hp will go from 227 to an astounding 230hp. Bigger engine, barely any jump in power. I'm sure it will be a stronger engine that may respond kindly to upgrades but, wouldn't you think it would put out a SMIDGE more power than 230?

The horsepower number really don't tell the tale. While it may only have 3 more horsies it will have lots more torque. It's the .5 liter of displacement & variable valve timing. I'm currently driving a Forester XT & it's only rated at 210 HP, but has 235 ft lb of torque. I've drive a WRX quite a bit & the XT has a lot more go & not near as much lag. I'm not knocking the WRX or 92x here just stating my view point.

You might ask why would I want a 92x if it doesn't have as much scoot. One word handling! I really like the way the WRX handles & from what I've read the 92x is even better with that STI steering rack. Hopefully I'll get to drive a 92x this week.

Re: '06 WRX

The Forester is also getting it's engine spec. boosted to 230HP.  From what I hear, at 210 HP it was very underrated.  At 230HP it is still a little underrated.  Actual output is probably closer to 240 or 250HP and if so, the 2.5L based WRX will probably have around the same real HP figures.

Yep I've heard that it's underrated too. That 2.5 with 230 wink is going to be great in a WRX.

I think so and it might just be enought to get me to hold off on picking up a 92x this month.  Seems to me the biggest problem with the car is the lag below ~3k.  Looks like this won't really be an issue after the 2.5 goes in.  I liked the engine a lot in the Legacy GT I test drove.

Re: '06 WRX

Yes, the engine size and hp might go up, but will the incentives/rebates still be there?  As far as I'm concerned, the $6000 grand rebate is hard to beat.

edit: but then again, i'm getting old and huge horsepower isn't my thing anymore.

lol, so am I and that's actually the reason I prefer the 2.5.  Has nothing to do with it being faster over all, it just feels so much stronger below 3500 rpm which is really where almost all of my driving takes place.

I agree it's not worth $6000, but a combination of not needing a new car (fo course I still want one) and the engine upgrade is probably enough to make me wait.

There really is no way to know what's going to happen in the future but I do remember when I was shopping for my current car almost 4 years ago, there were some huge rebates on the 9-3.  I'm not positive but I think they were in the $7-$8k range.

My current selfish hope is nobody wants a Saab this time next year and there are some big incentives again.  If there even is an '06 92-x (I'm betting there will be), otherwise I'll probably end up with an '06 WRX wagon.

Re: '06 WRX

Other than its exterior changes, has it been confirmed that the 2006 WRX (non STI) will be upgraded to a 2.5L Turbo?  All i've heard so far is rumors.

I too drove the Legacy GT, just to check it out. And I've autocrossed my friend's STi, though I've never street driven it ;-).
The 2.5 has TONS of torque, in the GT it feels good down low, and tapers at higher speeds, in the STi, it feels quite a bit like a good small block V8. The GT does seem to run out of breath compared to some other similar HP machines, but that is at rather extreme speeds (i.e. dipping into triple digits). Having had the STi demonstrated to me while I was in my //S6 (280 HP, 320 lb-ft, 3800 lbs), I can definitely say that the stock STi doesn't suffer the same lack of breath up high, I think it'll run a C5 Vette quite hard (and no, not a C6 nor ZO6).

Re: '06 WRX

Being the owner of 2 WRX wagons and one STi the new front end is just wrong. The designer of the new Subie is from Alfa Romeo...so that's were the front end comes from. sad
