Detailing 101

As many of you know, black paint is hard to keep looking real nice (I am learning this the hard way too).  Dev from Spyderchat is a fanatic about detailing his MR2 spyder and wrote up this amazing article on the Spyderchat forum which goes through each step needed to give your paint an amazing, swirl free, and beautiful luster that will last for a long time.  Lots of pictures of before, after, and in between as well.  Check it out if you are interested big_smile

edit : lol just realized i didnt give the link  lol ...   http://www.spyderchat.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=20887

Re: Detailing 101

Nice write up, but there are good points and bad.  Just some things I noticed:

- Clay should not be used regularly to prep before waxing...it is quite abrasive and will eat into your clear coat.
- Mechanical abrasives in a polish are not needed; chemical polishes do the job and usually are more consistent and easier to apply.
- Careful with machine polishing; I can get very similar results by hand...only downside is serious elbow grease.
- I prefer 3M detailing products.
- Most sealants are garbage.  Stick to a good wax.

Re: Detailing 101

He does mention that this should be good for about a year with regular maintenance, but dosnt say anything about the harm that claybar and polish can do to the paint if used too often (i.e. more than once a year).  Its a good guide otherwise and cleared up many misconceptions I had about paint care and hope others on this forum benefit from it as well.

Most sealants are garbage, how so?  Do they not last as long?  offer less protection? do not look as good?  I am curious as to why you have this opinion as I really dont have one at this point
