Re: Friend is looking for an AWD sedan <$18K

B5 S4 with extended warranty.

Otherwise I would go with an LGT

If he is down for an automatic, G35X

Choices in order

3.  B6 Audi A4 w/ V6

At the current level of gas prices I'd go B6 2.0T Audi A4 or Passat (IF you can get a Passat with 4mo and 2.0T). An easy car to get 30 MPG highway if you have the 6 sp.

The best driver, the Bimmer 330xi

Least expensive to own (except gas), the LGT.

With any newer Kraut wagon, I'd get an extended warrantee. The electrics and electronics are so complicated and integrated with the cars that a minor issue becomes difficult to diagonse, meaning $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
for what could be simple repairs.

The LGT, OTOH, don't need the Extended warrantee.

And, as noted, G35x, especially if an autobox is required. Tiptronic sucks, IMHO (it's sooooo slow to shift, even manually, although not as bad as Subies), don't know about Bimmer's autobox, never driven one. BUT the G35x (auto only) is really supposed to be pretty sweet.

You can't get the B6 Passat with 4Mo and the 2.0T.  Also the 4Mo is now haldex vice the torsen diff on the 5.5.

+1 on the repairs and complicated electronics.  Also the fuel economy on the 1.8T is not that great either.  You can't change the fact you are motivating a 3500 lb car.

LGT FTW.

Re: Friend is looking for an AWD sedan <$18K

The Waitformotion is a good suggestion. Did the Phaeton come AWD? (edit: I meant to add this in. Yes, yes it did). I <3 that car.

Looking on Autotrader finds a few in the very low 20s... that might be worth the stretch, though it would still qualify for Scargo's warnings: get an extended warranty or have money set aside for repairs (or, more likely, diagnostics prior to the repair).

The Phaeton is one of the most electronically ill vehicles ever made, cool car but just a freaking nightmare.  One of the cool things about that car is all the electronic bells and whistles, but if they don't work why bother.  They can be found very cheap though. The w12 is badass and a steal used.

If you don't care about fuel economy it is a great vehicle (all the caveats about electronics apply).  I loved the one I had.  It is a bit soft but the drivetrain was great at supra legal speeds and silky smooth.

I hadn't heard that they were plagued by electronic gremlins (at least, any more than any other high-end luxomobile). I agree, if they don't work, why bother. Nice car, though...

LGT FTW.

My friend regularly gets 30 MPG from his (rare) B4 Passat 1.8T 5sp 4mo WAGON in rural hilly driving in the same areas I'm hard pressed to get 24 MPG. Both MPG figures are determined the in the same fashion (yeah, we're both nerds). Heck, my 3800# //S6 gets nearly 25 MPG in the same driving. It has to do with compression ratios, and the improved relative efficiency. Both the //S6 and the Passat run 10.1:1 compression ratios. Also helps the transition to boost from off boost. Even in stock form, both the VAG products transition VERY smoothly onto boost, feels linear and nearly like an aspro.

FWIW, my friend's wife has a 2001 LGT (2.5 aspro, same engine in the Linear). It's hard pressed to get the same 30 MPG as the Passat.

Re: Friend is looking for an AWD sedan <$18K

Thank you everyone for their valuable and NONSRS responses.  If it were me, I'd have suggested a Veyron.star

I sent this thread to my friend.  Hopefully he and his fiance have more of a basis to make their decision off of.

God forbid they buy an SUV.
