Need help with my Transmission - stressed out...**update - Cars back**

Please  4eat jokes aside for once guys...  sad  Been stressed out like crazy over this lately.

I just dropped a huge load on a engagement ring and having car troubles is the last thing I need right now.   sad

No codes or cels. The car is your average cobb protuned stage 2 4eat with about 18k miles. Never tracked and fushed with Amsoil tranny fluids when i did the IPT VB upgrade about a year ago.

Few weeks back i noticed something odd but i thought i was just imagining things. Now i'm pretty certain i felt what i felt. Stopped at a light I proceeded to accelerate at light throttle once the light turned green. For a split second the car felt like it went from D into neutral and then back into drive. Car drove normal after that and I thought maybe i rolled over something wet or hit a pothole etc... didn't think anything of it.

Fast forward another week or two (only drive the car on weekends). I noticed that whenever I press the throttle alittle more or about half way down, the car would upshift from 1st to 2nd with a weird hiccup or jolt that wasn't there before. If i'm light on the throttle the car behaves normal. This is occuring at maybe 3-4k rpm with medium throttle. I'm sure it would do the same under full throttle at redline but I don't think its a good idea to test it out and make it worse. All other upshifts felt normal.

Now i'm noticing it doing it in all gears not just the 1-2 shift. As long as my throttle input is atleast 50%, the car upshifts with a weird jolt that even my passengers could feel. I've tried resetting the ecu/tcu etc.. nothing worked. I haven't had work done to the car recently either and I doubled checked everything in the engine bay just to be certain. All looks normal. Another strange thing it did the other day while i was testing the car.. I was manually shifting the car from 1-2-3 etc... Car felt normal but i was driving it easy with light throttle. I left the car in "2" for maybe 10mins of driving around local streets. Car felt normal since it doesn't shift. power is there, no slipping etc... When i came to a red light i put the car from "2" back into "D" when the car was stopped. When the light turned green i pressed on the gas lightly to accelerate and for like 2 seconds...the car was shaking as if it was going in and out of gear over and over again until it went into gear. Car drove normal after that.

I have no idea whats causing this. I'm afraid its something internal like the clutchpacks but my car doesn't seems to have the same symptoms that others with that failure. Typically screwed up clutchpacks from my understanding means slipping under WOT right? I'm having issues even at half throttle at no where near redline and the car gave no warning of something was failing prior to this. Car drove perfectly and never had any issues with the tranny.

Everything to me points towards something electrical or the VB since that controls how the car shifts. Any ideas?

I'm going to eventually bring the car back to IPT but my work schedule is making this tougher than it should.

Alan

Re: Need help with my Transmission - stressed out...**update - Cars back**

I had a Lexus SC400 (AT) which had a bad shift solenoid. This meant that after it warmed up, and you got on the gas at all, a CEL would come on and the car would either mess up the shift between 1-2, or stay in 1st for way too long. Each shift was a big "clunk" as well.

Mechanic said there were two solenoids, and the main one was bad, so the secondary one had to figure everything out but it had higher tolerances than the more sensitive main solenoid, so it required more load to engage a shift.

I have no idea if the WRX tranny has the same parts, but just might be an idea. Good luck!

FWIW it cost $500 at the dealer to fix, but that was a Lexus.

dealership for warranty work?  Perhaps the tranny computer? (electrical problem instead mechanical problem)

I never owned a car with auto tranny...

HAHHAHAHA.  They aren't going to allow warranty work on a car that has had the transmission modified on.  But good try.   wink

Sorry no words of wisdom... The few auto trannys I have had all worked OK.  I have to say it sounds like the clutch packs...  Please post what you find out as I was in the last part of the tortuous process of getting the VB mod planned for my car.  Congratulations BTW (on the engagement)!

Shouldn't this affect all shifts equally?

It didn't for my old car because there were two. One controlled the 1-2 shift, one controlled 3-4 shifts IIRC. When one failed, the other had to step up and do 100% of the workload, but it wasn't programmed to shift as accurately and smoothly as they both did.

My car still shifted through all the gears, but very clunkily and loudly, plus all the shift points were wrong.

Nope!  Relieved I didn't buy the 5MT...  I liked the 4MT in my VanagonGL better.

Re: Need help with my Transmission - stressed out...**update - Cars back**

Thanks guys...much appreciated.  I waited till after all of my proposal plans were done before I was going to stress over this car.  I guess now is that time  sad

To me it seems like a VB solenoid issue too because now its not affecting one gear/change but all.  None of the shifts are smooth like before if i give the car any decent throttle.  If i drive it regular (baby it) it shifts normal.  I'm thinking if its the clutchpacks, I don't think all 4 would break down all at once and usually the symptoms are different than what i'm experiencing.  Most experience slipping  going into gear etc...  Mine seems to almost bang into gear hence the jolt i'm feeling.  I'm going to try to bring the car back to IPT asap but i'm worried at the same time.  They've had rave reviews on the suby forums and John the owner was awesome the last time i was there.  I took pics of the shop etc... and he did the VB work right infront of me.  I'm worried because either way they are a buisness to make money and they could basically tell me anything they want and I'll pretty much have to take their word on it.  Arghh!  I was done modding this POS too!

Flash back to stock and take it to the dealer...with only 18K miles you shouldn't be getting tranny problems but you never know. Let the dealer handle it..maybe you will get a new tranny out of it.

Seems very likely caused by your Valve Body mod -- probably needs to be looked at or adjusted.  sad

Sorry man that sucks.  I have trustworthy sources around here to take my car to in these type of situations.  I would say take it to another shop before IPT just for a second opinion.  Oh and don't stress things will work out....

Pretty easy with the 4EAT.  Put in the 6spd swap the 4.11 for a 3.9 in the R160 and you are good to go  tongue. No new driveshafts needed.

Re: Need help with my Transmission - stressed out...**update - Cars back**

Thanks guys...

Finding a decent shop around here to work on cars isn't easy.  I made an appointment with IPT in the morning (taking half day from work) to see whats up.

If they give me bad news I will probrably have to revert my car back to stock and bring it to the dealer which isn't too comforting either.  Having saab techs working on a subaru  banghead  I highly doubt my mods would fly too well with the dealer too.

6spd swap would be nice but prolly cost half of what the car is currently worth at this point.  Its not as straight forward as other cars prolly due to the different AWD parts etc...  Right now i'm praying its only the VB solenoids.  I've had the IPT modded VB in the car for about a year now.  Maybe it caused more wear and tear on the solenoids, maybe not.  I'll find out tomorrow (hopefully).

I was under the impression that alot more needed to be done?  Eitherway a good used Sti MT still runs upwards of 3K not including all the misc parts and labor.  I really don't want to dump anymore money into this car.  I was happy with it and already spent way more than i planned to (about 10k)  sly

Well from what I can tell you can spend more if you go to an R180 rear diff but yes you would need some misc parts like a clutch pedal + linkage.  The 4EAT is the same length as the 6MT and you can swap the R160 for the correct ratio to make up for the 1:1 ratio in the 6MT.

Seriously I hope it works out and I would like to hear how you make out with IPT.  I had my VB mod all planned (about a two week downtime for the car for me) and if that is indeed the issue that will give me pause.
