Despite what Justin and Jim say - about hippies and unions - it's a very well made shoe.

You can go ahead and support sweatshop labor and buy Chucks (now owned by Nike & no longer made in America) - they'll last you a few months.

or

You can support fair trade and workers who are paid well and work in good conditions and buy Blackspots -- they'll last you about ten times as long as a pair of Chucks.

Hmmm... and for the record - only about 40% of the shop is unionized, because the other 60% are happy enough with their situation that they don't see the point in joining the union. They get an hour and a half for lunch every day, the factory is quiet and clean and they all make about 150 % of Portugal's minimum wage.

Now... kindly go stick your heads back up your asses, Justin and Jim. I'm going for a walk in my ethical shoes.  cool

Re: Last pair of shoes you bought?

Chet90si and Dire know whats up.

Guys like Justin and Jim I will never understand when it comes to the world economy. You seem to be proponents of unfair and exploitive circumstances -- what the fuck? How can you justify such a stance?

Unions aside, people should make fair wages and be able to expect clean and safe working conditions. You hold that against them! Furthermore, the product you buy (shoes in this case) should be on par quality-wise with the price you pay.

Converse All-Stars cost about $40.00 and are made POORLY. What a waste of money as far as I am concerned.

I wore my first pair of Blackspots years ago, and I only owned THOSE sneakers. One fucking pair of sneakers, worn day in and day out, and for six months of that time I was actually a law firm courier (runner) walking over 10 miles a day back and forth through the law district in Las Vegas -- they held up like superheroes.

Could a Converse take on full-time sneaker duty for more than two years? NO FUCKING WAY. The extra $30 is well worth it when you think about who makes the shoe and who benefits from the purchase.

Re: Last pair of shoes you bought?

[Off topic]

I understand the union argument.  But I don't think unions are necessary in today's economy.  Yes, back in the day the needed them...now not so much.

For instance, some of the union shop guys at my dad's company were striking when he first started there as CFO.  Because he was a new face, none of the guys knew who he was.  He went to the line one afternoon in jeans and shirt and was shooting the shit with some of the guys--they were striking for more pay.  My dad asked them why they didn't go to one of the other local companies--their response, "because no one pays as well as the current company."

Or another instance, my old boss used to work in construction, they had a pallet of bricks and there were three rods of rebar on top of the pallet.  My boss had gone over to move the rebar so they could begin bricking.  His boss stops him, and tells him that they have to wait for the "iron union" (not sure of the exact name) to remove it, because they can't touch it.  So they sat around for 2.5 hours drinking coffee and smoking, until the "iron union" came to move them--all on the clock.

Or my friends who work for American Electric Power, take their trucks and crews out and just go find a back road and sleep for the first two hours of their shift.

But you know what, now a days we have things like OSHA, minimum wage, etc., it isn't the US that has sweatshops (yes I know some companies utilize questionable outsourced labor).

But you know what, don't support those companies if you don't like their practices, no one is forcing you to wear their stuff or shop at their stores.

I also get very pissed off when people cast critical eyes at someone--but you know what, the young father/mother working at lower income position are going to be happy to purchase their food at WalMart vs. Whole Foods.

Re: Last pair of shoes you bought?

I buy Timberlands because I like their styling, I like how they fit, and I like how they hold up. If you want to talk ethical shoe companies read up on them.

I don't see why you need to go way out of your way to purchase a brand of shoes that's so anti-establishment. I don't buy shoes that often. I think there are better things, that you purchase on a regular basis, to be concerned about where they come from.

I was there last week and went a little crazy... Nike Frees, Nike Plus running shoes, Barca Jersey, Arsenal Shorts, Barca training top, some running shorts and a shirt...  I loved growing up in OR and having friends/family who either work at Nike or Adidas and get you the hook up! Nothing like 50% off and no sales tax. Say what you want but I love nike and adidas.

That's the Original's "Players" collection stuff right?  It depends, the adidas employee store is more hit or miss than the Nike one.  Also, most Original's stuff is only 30% off. I can check though when I am home next month though.

Re: Last pair of shoes you bought?

There was a couple pieces that I wanted from Rohrl, mainly a track jacket and regular jacket, they had the stuff here at the Adidas Outlet outside Chicago but when I went again, no sign of the apparel in the store, they rarily pop up on ebay, but never in my size.
