Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

Just made the switchover to Amsoil 5W-30 full synthetic at 7500 miles.  Previously had Castrol 5W-30 synthetic blend (at 3700 miles).  I became sold on Amsoil when I put it in my motorcycle (2003 Honda CBR600R, which revs to 15,000 rpm).  My experience with my RR and my Aero are the same: the engine revs smoother, freer, and faster, and pulls harder.

Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30, Group V full synthetic.  2.08 after rebate...I have several oil changes stocked, and will watch for it going on sale and buy more every time I see it on sale.  Very nice oil, very good fuel mileage with it.

Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

German Castrol 0w30.  This car seems to love the stuff.

A bit expensive though at around $5.50/qt. at AutoZone if you don't buy it during a sale.

I may switch to Penzoil Platinum once I get tired of spending the money on GC.  From the threads I've seen at BITOG it is >= Mobil 1.

Haven't checked if Shell Rotella Full Synth meets warrantee req'mts (IT'S GOOD stuff, and quite inexpensive), but if it does, I'm going to switch to Rotella after this change. Currently Mobil 1 10W-30, or 5W-40 Truck/SUV (needed until my Audi's extended warrantee expired). So far, I've never spent more than $21 for 5qts.

Whatever the dealership puts in!
I know they use full synthetic, but haven't asked what brand.
I will ask when I bring it in for 22.5K service.

Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

Just curious, but what's with the obsession about trying to get oil for cheap?  Oil is the life's blood of your engine.  Shouldn't we be putting quality ahead of price?  o2man98 has been kind enough to offer saab92x'ers a break on Amsoil, but I'd gladly pay full price for the stuff because I think it's the highest quality.  Not knocking trying to find good bargains on quality oil (like Mobil 1), mind you.  Just don't think price should be the deciding factor IMHO.

Hey Jim!  Wasn't knocking you or anyone else trying to save money.  Nor was I trying to say that people should spend more money to put the "best" (subjective) oil in their car.  For the record, I'm a beer snob and a wine snob, not an oil snob.  lol  I just have a lot of confidence in Amsoil and have noticed a difference in the way my engine runs (both in my RR and 9-2X) so that's why I use it.  I think Mobil 1 and Castrol are great products.  In fact, as I made the transition from dino to synthetic, I used Castol synthetic blend inbetween.  I have Mobil 1 in my Isuzu Trooper.  Amsoil is definitely pricey.  Full price is $6.75 a quart or $26.70 for a gallon jug (a whopping 30 cents savings!)  o2man98 gives saab92x.com'ers a price break (you have to contact him directly), but it's still going to be more expensive that Mobil 1 or Castrol from WalMart and other such places.

Sure, that's why I'd never put Wolf's Head oil in my car.  Why the elitist attitude?  I'm not a "oil snob".

It's crazy, though, to spend $10 or $20 more on 5 quarts of oil when testing shows the results between them were the same.  I use Castrol, simply because I always have used Castrol products, and their synthetic tests and lasts just as good as Mobil 1, but it's a few dollars cheaper for 5 quart container.  So, I get to use my favorite oil and save a few bucks - what's wrong with that?

I might consider Amsoil, but I'm not going to let it stay in my engine like some obsessive and very cheapskate-ish people do.  I know lots of peole who put long-term oil products in to save money, not do better things for their engines.

I have the opportunity to buy Elf oil at about $25 for 5 liters, also - haven't decided on that - I can be a distributor if I want, I met the East Coast vendor at SEMA in April.

I've never had anyone quote me a price on 5 quarts of Amsoil - what's it cost?

I probably did use Wolfs Head back in the day when my first car, a Vega, burned a qt/day.  On the subject, Valvoline Synthpower 5w-30. Every 7500 miles.

Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

I use Mobil 1 10w30 on the STi.
I'm still debating whether I would use w/ Castrol Synt on 92X or stay w/ Mobil 1 just like the STi.

And seems like the Saab dealership I go uses Castrol's semi synth.
So I'm trying to match theirs.

Reasons: you can find them anywhere big_smile

Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

I don't mind spending an extra $10 bucks on oil for an oil change for GC versus whatever full syn is on sale.  I'll probably end up changing my oil about once every 3 months...  4 times a year.   That's $40 a year... a drop in the bucket compared to what I spend on gas and mods.

I balance it out by only putting Supertech in my beater smile  The beater gets the "leftover oil cocktail" and then topped off with Supertech.

Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

The reason NOT to spend a lot of money on oil, is that MANY relative cheap mineral oils run in MANY vehicles for 250,000+ miles with no problems.  I'm not saying some oils aren't better than others...they are.  BUT, usually, the car falls apart before the engine does.  Using Walmart oil (as long as it is the correct grade and viscosity) and changing it when it should be changed, your engine can last longer than you'd EVER keep the car, with no oil-related problems.

ALL THAT SAID, I use Pennzoil Platinum on sale, because it is better than Walmart oil...at least, according to Used Oil Analysis...at only 2.08 per quart, it's a very good deal.

I would tend to agree with most engines.  I wonder about a 2.0 turbo putting out just shy of 300 hp.

I am not sure how many of our cars will see 250,000+ miles.   hmm

Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

M1 5W30 Truck & SUV.  I accidentally picked this up for my 15k service, and was quite surprised that I didn't burn a drop of oil between then and my 22.5k service (this morning, actually).  When I ran regular M1 5W30 between the 7.5k and 15k, and ended up adding 1.5 quarts.

I had assumed there wasn't much different between to 2, but maybe not.  I don't have enough oil changes to know for sure yet.

Both are exactly the same price, ~$21 for the 5 quart jug.

Re: What Type Of Oil Do You Use In Your 9-2?

Snaab-2, you are correct.  Not many cars have 2.0 liters and 300 hp.  It's those cars (if they are driven hard), that would realize the most benefits of a "better" oil.  We stock 2.5 Linear guys; well, absent some malfunction, we would probably not benefit.  In my car, the Pennzoil Platinum is surely overkill.  However, I think people can see a benefit to taking better care of their transmission fluids...especially those with automatics.  It's amazing how many people just assume the transmissions are fine with those ultra-long fluid change intervals.  Auto transmissions are expensive to replace!

I buy the 5 qt Mobile 1 jug at walmart for like $22, and use OEM filters & plug gaskets.

I then pay someone to do the change, cuz i'm lazy.

Running AMSOIL Series 2000 0w-30 right now with an AMSOIL EaO13 oil filter. Super smooth and seems to crank over a little faster when starting. I do not worry about my wife not warming up the car with this oil.

Ran the AMSOIL XL 5w-30 before this and it was good as well. Burned ZERO in 6000 miles. Put in around 1200miles I believe it was.

For those of us in colder climates, a full synthetic makes a big difference when the temp drops
below zero.

I just keep using it in the summer, also...
